Month by Month Responsibilities
January and February: Helping with snow removal, various tasks around the shop, cleaning and organizing in the shop, assisting our Service Department when they need extra helpers, possibly working on getting a CDL license. Hours are based on how much you want to work, if you want to work 40+ hours, we’ll find work for you, if you want to cut back to 30-40, that’s absolutely fine too.
March: Startup letters and emails are sent to our customers, and we begin scheduling. We also typically get our spring order around this time, so a few days are spent putting away our new products and supplies. Depending on the season, we may also have opportunities to install new systems.
April: We get our service trucks out of storage, go through tool bins and organize, restock, and make sure they’re ready to run for the season. Then, startups begin, and run through the end of May. We service around 500 systems each spring, doing minor repairs whenever possible. April may be slow, depending on weather, but either way we begin starting up systems.
May: All of May is committed to getting our customers’ irrigation systems installed. We allow for up to an hour on site for city/well systems, and an hour and a half for lake/river systems. You will be required to do all paperwork before moving on to your next job, work with the customer to explain and problems you may find with their system, and answer any questions. Customer service is very important with our company, so it’s important to be respectful and patient with our customers.
June and July: Depending on the spring we had, we may continue to start systems, but generally by June we begin service work. We will work through any repairs that may have come up during startups, and plan ahead for any other major service jobs that may require a trencher or other equipment. Service calls are mapped out in order of how they should be completed, and given specific timeframes of when we’ll be there. If you are ever running behind, communication is important, let me know so that I can reach out to the customers and let them know we’re behind or have to reschedule.
August: Our service season may start to taper at this point, however our communications for Winterizations go out, and then we begin getting ready to winterize systems. Each fall we service around 1,000 customers, so making sure we’re ready for that is important. We will continue service until September when they begin.
September and October: We begin our winterizations mid-September, and run through the end of October. You will have a compressor to tow around, a hose real, and all the tools you’ll need. Generally, we don’t complete repairs during winterizations unless the schedule is light or the repairs are needed to properly winterize the system. Again, we run a very tight schedule, so if you fall behind at all, it’s important to let me know so I can communicate with the customers that we are running behind.
November and December: Once October ends, we should be through the majority of our winterizations, however there is always some that call us late. We will take care of any other customers that call in, and sometime are even able to continue service work or installs. We will also begin going through our service trucks, inventorying them, cleaning, servicing, and storing for the winter. We also need to inventory all our irrigation related parts, to prepare for our spring order.
