Scalables is a small lab-automation company in Branford. We make Daisy: compact, plug-and-play modules — pumps, valves, and motion stages, each about the size of a coffee mug — that chain together so a lab can automate an experiment without a six-figure robot. Our customers are university and research labs, biotech startups, and STEM classrooms.

Everything we ship is built here by hand, in small batches. This role helps build it.

About the role
\n
We're hiring an entry-level assembler. No prior experience required — we'll train you on our tools, parts, and process. You'll build and check out the modules that go to customers, working alongside the people who designed them.
\n
\n
Most new assemblers pick up the basics in a few days and are fully up to speed within a few months. Because we're a small shop, the job isn't only assembly — you'll also run our 3D printers and laser etcher. It's a good start if you're detail-oriented, good with your hands, and want real skills in mechanical and electrical fabrication.

What you'll do
\n
• Follow step-by-step instructions, drawings, and diagrams to assemble modules in sequence.
\n
• Fit and fasten small parts into machined aluminum enclosures using hand and power tools.
\n
• Install control boards, connect wiring, and route tubing and fittings to spec.
\n
• Run our 3D printers: load material, start jobs, check output, clear failed prints.
\n
• Mark and finish parts on the laser etcher, after safety training.
\n
• Check parts against tolerance with calipers and micrometers.
\n
• Run finished modules through function checks and flag anything that seems off.
\n
• Clean and lubricate parts and subassemblies.
\n
• Label modules with serial numbers so units stay traceable.
\n
• Keep your bench, tools, and bins organized and safe.
\n
• Take on more of the build as you gain experience.
\n

What you'll need
\n
\n
• High school diploma or equivalent.
\n
• No previous assembly experience — we train on the job.
\n
• Ability to follow written procedures accurately.
\n
• Reliability, and a willingness to ask when something isn't clear.
\n
• Willingness to wear required PPE every shift.
\n
\n
Nice to have
\n
• Hands-on experience with tools, from work, school, a makerspace, or a hobby..
\n
• Basic computer comfort (email, forms, Microsoft Office or similar)..
\n
• Interest in learning to read drawings and specifications..
\n
\n
Essential functions
\n
\n
This role requires the ability to:
\n
• Do close, detailed bench work for extended periods.
\n
• Distinguish fine visual detail at close range, with or without correction.
\n
• Handle small parts and fasteners accurately with hand and power tools.
\n
• Work safely around hot surfaces, such as printer nozzles and build plates.
\n
• Stand, sit, and move between workstations throughout the shift.
\n
• Perform repetitive hand and arm motions.
\n
• Lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
\n
• Wear safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection.
\n
\n
Work environment
\n
• Indoor, climate-controlled shop.
\n
• Bench work, with regular in-person check-ins.
\n
• Some standing and repetitive motion, balanced with seated work.
\n
• Occasional exposure to shop dust and oils — controlled with ventilation and PPE.
\n
• Hands-on safety training on the printers and etcher before you use them on your own.
\n

Compensation
\n
$25.00 per hour, about 10 hours per week to start, with the option to increase.
\n
