Position summary:
The library janitors are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, order, and overall appearance of the library facilities, including public areas, offices, restrooms, and grounds. This position supports a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment for patrons and staff by performing regular cleaning, light maintenance, and event setup tasks.
Essential functions:
- Sweep, mop, vacuum dust, and clean all library areas, including floors, carpets, windows, doors, restroom counter tops and toilets, breakrooms and workspaces
 - Refill and restock paper products, soap, and cleaning supplies as needed
 - Empty trash and recycling receptacles, transport waste to exterior disposal bins
 - Report needed repairs or safety hazards to the Building and Grounds Manager
 - Set up and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings or programs
 - Monitor and secure facility doors and lights at opening and closing times as assigned
 - Operate cleaning and maintenance equipment safely and according to procedures
 - Clean meeting rooms after use and arrange furniture
 - Respond promptly to emergency cleaning needs, including spills, bodily fluids, or other sanitation incidents (e.g., vomit, illness-related accidents, or broken glass), ensuring the area is cleaned, disinfected, and safe for public use
 - Other related duties as assigned
 
Additional functions:
- May perform routine maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, or minor paint touch-ups
 - May assist with maintenance of walkways and entryways, maintaining safe access for staff and patrons
 
Respond to cleaning
- May need to drive to other branch locations on occasions
 
Physical requirements include, but not limited to:
- Ability to perform repetitive hand/wrist/arm/shoulder movements for extended durations: continuous grasping/gripping, reaching shoulder height and below, occasionally reaching overhead
 - Frequent to continuous lifting, handling and carrying objects weighing:
- 1 to 35 pounds, frequently
 - 36 to 75 pounds rarely.
 
 - Frequent bending, stooping, squatting and kneeling
 - Frequent pushing/pulling (mops, vacuums, janitor carts, etc.)
 - Occasional climbing stairs and ladders
 - Occasional sitting
 - Speech, vision, touch, hearing and smell are required, as is the ability to identify certain colors
 - Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to understand instructions, safety information and workplace communications
 
Working conditions:
- Work is performed indoors and occasionally outdoors in varied weather conditions
 - Exposure to cleaning chemicals and moderate noise levels
 
Examples of equipment, tools & software used on the job:
- HRIS timekeeping and entry via computer, phones
 - Vacuum cleaner, mop, broom, and other small hand tools and cleaning apparatus commonly associated with the profession
 
Minimum Education and Qualifications:
- All employees must successfully pass a criminal background check before hire
 - High school diploma or equivalent preferred
 - Prefer a licensed driver with an acceptable driving record
 - Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred; public facility experience desirable
 - Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
 - Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings or weekends
 
Special knowledge, skills, license, etc.:
- Standard knowledge and practical use of cleaning compounds, chemicals, tools, and practices
 - Understanding of safe handling, storage and application of cleaning materials in accordance with safety and sanitation standards
