Position : Onsite PostgreSQL Technical Lead

Location: Mclean, VA - Fully onsite
Start Date - 2/2026 - ongoing assignment

Must Have Qualifications

  • Must have strong PostgreSQL expertise, including advanced database administration with some exposure to MongoDB.
  • The ideal candidate has prior tech lead experience and hands-on AWS/Cloud database experience.

Job Summary

  • We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead with a strong background in PostgreSQL to join our dynamic team.
  • The ideal candidate will possess expertise in database architecture, design, development, and optimization, as well as hands-on experience with cloud-native database solutions.
  • This role is responsible for leading technical initiatives, ensuring optimal database performance, and guiding migration strategies across complex environments. The position requires a deep understanding of PostgreSQL and MongoDB systems, AWS ecosystem automation tools, and best practices for high availability, security, and compliance.


Key Responsibilities

PostgreSQL and MongoDB Architecture & Best Practices:

  • Design, implement, and optimize PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases for scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL and MongoDB architecture, including query planning, indexing, partitioning, and replication.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for database design, normalization, and data integrity.
  • Deploy and manage PostgreSQL and MongoDB clusters, focusing on high availability, global databases, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Utilize AWS storage management and monitoring tools to ensure optimal database health and performance.
  • Implement performance and cost optimization strategies within the environment.


Database Administration & Optimization:

  • Monitor and tune database performance, including query optimization and resource allocation.
  • Perform regular backup and recovery operations, ensuring data integrity and compliance with security standards.
  • Oversee access management, security controls, and regulatory compliance for all database systems.
  • Migration Planning and Execution:
  • Lead end-to-end database migration projects, including planning, execution, and post-migration validation.
  • Ensure data integrity verification and minimal downtime during migration processes.


Technical Leadership:

  • Mentor and guide junior database engineers and developers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align database strategies with business objectives.
  • Document technical solutions, operational procedures, and best practices for ongoing reference.


Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB database systems, with at least 2+ years in a technical leadership capacity.
  • In-depth understanding of PostgreSQL and MongoDB architecture, including query optimization, indexing, and partitioning.
  • Proven experience designing, developing, and optimizing databases for high performance and reliability.
  • Extensive experience with AWS including management, monitoring, high availability, and global databases.
  • Familiarity with AWS automation tools such as CloudFormation and Terraform for infrastructure management.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in database environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration: performance monitoring, backup/recovery, tuning, query optimization, data integrity, security, compliance, and access management.
  • Successful track record of planning and executing database migrations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications in PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or AWS.
  • Experience migrating databases from legacy systems to cloud-native solutions.
  • Knowledge of additional AWS services (e.g., Lambda, EC2, S3) and their integration with database platforms.
  • Experience implementing database automation and infrastructure as code practices.
