FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a skilled Firmware Engineer with hands-on experience developing embedded software for STM32 microcontrollers and a strong interest in active implantable medical devices. This role focuses on building reliable, low‐power, safety‐critical firmware across a distributed medical ecosystem that includes implants, wearables, and user‐facing base stations. You'll collaborate closely with electrical engineers, systems engineers, and clinical teams to deliver robust, high‐reliability solutions aligned with stringent medical‐device quality standards.
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
Firmware Development for STM32 Devices
- Design, implement, and debug firmware for STM32 microcontrollers in both implantable devices, wearables, and external base station architectures.
- Develop low power firmware optimized for long term implantable operation and high reliability base station communication.
- Implement drivers, middleware, and application layer functionality—including sensors, power management, wireless communication stacks, and core system services.
- Develop and maintain firmware for BLE and other communication protocols.
System Integration & Hardware Collaboration
- Integrate firmware with analog/digital electronics, RF subsystems, embedded sensors, and host side applications.
- Support interoperability between implants, base stations, mobile apps, and cloud services.
- Assist in system bring up, verification, and troubleshooting across the whole medical ecosystem.
Safety Critical & Regulatory Compliance
- Contribute to design documentation, hazard analysis, and internal/external audits for medical device compliance (IEC 62304, ISO 14971, ISO 13485).
- Ensure traceability, unit testing, integration testing, and firmware validation for regulated products.
- Support design reviews, risk assessments, and verification package development.
Sustaining Engineering & Field Issue Resolution
- Diagnose and resolve firmware related issues from clinical or field environments, including telemetry reliability, power anomalies, and sensor performance.
- Provide enhancements to both legacy implantable devices and next generation platforms.
- Contribute to logging, telemetry frameworks, and failure analysis tools.
Sensor Algorithms & Wireless Technology
- Optimize BLE or RF communication parameters for reliability, latency, and low power behavior
The selected candidate will also possess:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
- 3–6 years of experience in embedded firmware development.
- Strong proficiency in C/C++, embedded debugging, and real‐time embedded systems.
- Experience with STM32 MCUs and peripherals (I2C, SPI, UART, ADC, DMA, timers, etc.).
- Experience with RTOS environments (FreeRTOS preferred).
- Experience with low power embedded design, battery operated systems, or long-life medical hardware.
- Hands on experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, SWD/JTAG debuggers, and embedded test tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with implantable or wearable medical devices.
- Understanding of biocompatibility, implant safety, and physiological sensing.
- Familiarity with medical‐device development standards (IEC 62304, ISO 13485).
- Experience with sensor systems such as IMUs, accelerometers, or biosignal sensors.
- Experience developing firmware in support of wireless technologies (BLE).
- Exposure to cloud connected medical ecosystems or clinical workflows.
Success Traits
- Strong ownership of technical outcomes.
- Excellent debugging, documentation, and analytical skills.
- Ability to operate effectively across hardware, firmware, and system‐level boundaries.
- High attention to detail and commitment to safety and reliability in life‐critical products.
- Collaborative mindset with a desire to push forward next‐generation medical technologies.
