Position Description: Asphalt Apprentice

Professional Pavement Services is a family owned, full-service paving, construction, and property maintenance contractor serving Central and Northern Ohio. We offer comprehensive, year-round construction and maintenance services, including asphalt, concrete, landscaping, power washing and winter operations. Our mission is to build lasting partnerships and exceed expectations through quality work, safety, and integrity. We take pride in doing things the right way, supporting our team, and delivering work we can stand behind. Built on teamwork, accountability, and respect, we’re looking for people who want steady, hands-on work and the opportunity to grow with a company that invests in its people and serves its communities year-round.

Job Overview

We are seeking a hardworking and reliable Asphalt Apprentice to join our paving crew. The Asphalt Apprentice will support asphalt paving operations by performing a variety of manual tasks related to the preparation, application, and finishing of asphalt surfaces for roads, parking lots, driveways, and other projects. This role requires physical stamina, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to safety. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with paver operators, roller operators, and foremen to ensure projects are completed efficiently and meet quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Site Preparation: Clear debris, sweep surfaces, and prepare job sites by setting up traffic control devices, string lines, or grade stakes as directed.
  • Material Handling: Shovel, rake, and spread hot mix asphalt to assist in filling voids, creating smooth transitions, and preparing the mat for compaction.
  • Support Paving Operations: Load asphalt into paver hoppers, clean excess material from equipment, and assist in guiding trucks to ensure continuous material flow.
  • Surface Finishing: Use hand tools (e.g., lutes, rakes, shovels) to smooth edges, fill low spots, and prepare asphalt for rolling; assist with applying sealants or tack coats as needed.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean tools, pavers, and rollers at the end of shifts, and assist with fueling or minor upkeep tasks to keep equipment operational.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and stay alert to job site hazards, including moving equipment and hot asphalt.
  • Team Support: Work under the direction of the foreman and assist other crew members to maintain a steady workflow and meet project deadlines.
  • Seasonal Duties: Assist with snow removal and de-icing during winter months.
  • Other: Additional miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Prior experience in asphalt paving or construction is preferred but not required; willingness to learn on the job is essential.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., stand for long periods, perform repetitive motions, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Skills: Basic knowledge of hand tools and construction practices; ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team setting.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not mandatory.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required. Must meet insurability standard. The ability to tow trailers or transport equipment is a plus.
  • Additional Requirements: Ability to pass a drug test as part of a drug-free workplace policy.
  • Phone: Must have cell phone to clock in and out daily, log jobs, and follow other company communications.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors at residential, commercial, or municipal properties, depending on the project.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, heavy materials, and seasonal weather is common; some tasks may involve heights or confined spaces.
  • Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak construction or landscaping seasons (spring through fall).
  • Rare but possible multi-day, out-of-town trips, including long-distance travel, and overnight stays.

Salary and Benefits

  • Pay Range: Starting wage aligns with local non-union standards (apart from prevailing wage jobs) and is commensurate with experience, versatility, and additional skills like lawncare/chemical application.
  • Benefits:
  1. Medical-partial percentage paid by the company after 60 days,
  2. Dental and vision after 60 days,
  3. 401K with a company match after 6 months of employment,
  4. Vesting PTO immediately, along with other ancillary benefits,
