Job Description

Role: The Head Coach is responsible for providing Christian leadership principles to a winning basketball program within the framework of the mission of the university and the intercollegiate athletic department. In addition, the head coach is to establish an environment in which student-athletes develop as well as mature spiritually, academically, socially and athletically with the purpose of each performer and team reaching their potential. All activities of this position are to make a contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the university and the intercollegiate athletic department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the following duties satisfactorily:

Responsibility A: To lead and develop the basketball program within the framework of the mission of the university and the intercollegiate athletic department.

  • Read and follow all provisions as outlined by the Policies and Procedures manual of the University and the Intercollegiate Athletic Department
  • Respond to all administrative correspondence in the requested time frame and attend all staff meetings
  • Submit a projected yearly budget and stay within budgeted allotments as set by the Athletic Director and Institution
  • Know the rules and regulations of the NCAA and PacWest to ensure compliance with departmental, University, conference, and national policies
  • Implement game rules and PacWest /NCAA regulations on a consistent basis
  • Within the framework of NCAA policies, recruit prospective student-athletes who are of the level necessary to be successful academically and athletically
  • Ensure assistant coaches and student-athletes are positive Christian representatives of the University at all times
  • Assign assistant coaches specific duties, supervise the assignments, and complete proper evaluations at the end of the season
  • Promote unity within the Athletic Department by working in cooperation together and by supporting all University personnel

Responsibility B: To establish an environment in which student-athletes develop as well as grow spiritually, academically, socially, and athletically.

  • Maintain the development and welfare of the student-athlete as the number one priority of the program
  • Ensure academic success, focusing on classroom achievement and graduation requirements
  • Provide leadership that promotes positive Christian attitudes and good sportsmanship with all student-athletes
  • Work with student-athletes in a fair, understanding, tolerant, sympathetic, and patient manner
  • To student-athletes, provide instruction and spiritual guidance that will lead to positive values, acceptable behavior, and self-discipline consistent with the philosophy of athletics; motivate the team for maximum performance by utilizing motivational philosophies that meet the needs of students and that are consistent with Athletic Program philosophy

Responsibility C: To develop, establish, and maintain a winning basketball program within the framework of the mission of the University and the Intercollegiate Athletic Department.

  • Display good sportsmanship in relationships with students, staff, officials, and opponents, as consistent with NCAA policies regarding the principle of sportsmanship and ethical conduct
  • Maintain up-to-date information on sport regulations, rule changes, and NCAA policies
  • Submit yearly budget to the Athletic Director and keep current on all team expenditures to ensure compliance with the team budget
  • Maintain and submit all required conference and NCAA lists, forms, and records on time as instructed by the Compliance Office
  • Develop in each student-athlete a respect for University property and its care
  • Work with the Athletic Director in setting goals and objectives for the Athletic Department; act in a wise and prudent manner when the Athletic Director is not available
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of staff personnel and in the development of roles and responsibilities
  • Effectively manage time in a demanding work environment
  • Adhere to all institutional, PacWest, and NCAA bylaws and regulations
  • Ensure the physical, emotional, and social welfare of student-athletes
  • Establish and ensure a safe environment for student-athletes
  • Understand and agree to abide by the mission of the Athletic Department

Responsibility D: Perform all other duties and/or responsibilities as needed and/or as assigned by the Athletic Director and/or University administration.

  • Supervise home events as assigned by the Athletic Director
  • Fundraise

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Submit declaration of playing and practice season and the schedule request form
  • Conduct team orientation before each academic year
  • Educate prospective student-athletes and enrolled student-athletes about NCAA Division II, PacWest, and institutional rules
  • Maintain pre-approved roster goal
  • Submit and log off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations
  • Secure the release of potential transfer students and receive proper permission to contact
  • Review, audit, and submit weekly practice/competition logs in ARMS
  • Self-report NCAA Division II rules violations to the Compliance Office
  • Review summer regulations regarding Athletics participation, camps, and employment for coaches and student-athletes
  • Submit Letter of Intent forms for prospective student-athletes
  • Coordinate the release of Letter of Intent signees with the Compliance Office
  • Communicate with Financial Aid, Admissions, and the Registrar's Office
  • Manage annual renewal, increase, reduction, cancellation, or non-renewal of athletic grants-in-aid with the Financial Aid Office and Compliance Office
  • Monitor compliance with NCAA Division II and PacWest bylaws

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervise assistant coaches, graduate assistants, and student managers. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from a four-year college or university; two to five years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Full Time Staff, Exempt

$95-105,000/yr
