Appliance Repair Technician Apprentice - Paid Training
Job Description
Job Description
Start a Skilled Trade Career With Paid, Hands-On Training
Are you mechanically inclined, dependable, and interested in learning a skilled trade?
N.F. Landis & Son Inc., a fourth-generation family-owned company serving the community since 1932, is looking for an Appliance Repair Technician Apprentice to join our service team.
Previous appliance repair experience is not required. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, mechanical ability, and willingness to learn. You will receive paid, hands-on training while working alongside experienced appliance service technicians.
This is a career-track position—not a temporary helper role. As you demonstrate the required skills, you will progress from supervised training to completing selected repairs and eventually running service calls independently.
What You’ll Do
- Ride with and assist experienced appliance service technicians.
- Learn how to diagnose and repair refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, ovens, cooktops, and other household appliances.
- Help safely move appliances and gain access to components requiring service.
- Learn how to use meters, diagnostic tools, manufacturer service information, and company-provided software.
- Assist with disassembly, parts replacement, reassembly, and operational testing.
- Maintain an organized work area and help keep the assigned service vehicle clean and properly stocked.
- Accurately document work performed, parts used, and information gathered during service calls.
- Communicate respectfully and professionally with customers in their homes.
- Attend company, manufacturer, and technical training.
- Follow company safety procedures and protect customers’ homes and property.
- Gradually complete supervised and independent service work as training milestones are achieved.
What You’ll Learn
- Appliance electrical systems and safe electrical testing.
- Mechanical troubleshooting and failure diagnosis.
- Water, drain, gas, airflow, and heating systems used in household appliances.
- How to read wiring diagrams and manufacturer service literature.
- Proper use of hand tools, meters, and specialty diagnostic equipment.
- Customer communication and professional in-home service practices.
- How to estimate repairs, document service work, and process service calls.
- EPA refrigerant-handling practices and certification requirements as your training advances.
- The skills needed to become an independent Appliance Service Technician.
What We’re Looking For
- No previous appliance repair experience is required.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and genuine interest in learning how equipment works.
- Dependable attendance and the ability to arrive ready to work each day.
- Willingness to accept instruction, ask questions, and apply feedback.
- Patience and persistence when troubleshooting unfamiliar problems.
- Professional appearance and respectful customer-service skills.
- Ability to work safely in customers’ homes and treat their property with care.
- Comfort using a smartphone, tablet, and basic computer applications.
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds repetitively and up to 100 pounds occasionally with assistance or appropriate equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
Experience in appliance installation, electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, automotive repair, maintenance, construction, or another mechanical trade is helpful but not required.
What Success Looks Like
A successful apprentice will:
- Arrive on time and prepared to learn.
- Follow instructions and established safety procedures.
- Take care of company tools, vehicles, customers’ homes, and equipment.
- Accurately document what was observed and completed.
- Demonstrate steady progress in diagnostic and repair skills.
- Complete assigned training and certification requirements.
- Earn authorization to perform increasingly complex repairs with less supervision.
Advancement is based on demonstrated ability, reliability, customer service, and completion of training milestones—not simply time in the position.
What We Offer
- Competitive apprentice pay with opportunities for increases as skills and responsibilities grow.
- Paid, hands-on training with experienced technicians.
- Manufacturer and technical training opportunities.
- A defined path toward becoming an independent Appliance Service Technician.
- Performance-based incentives as eligibility requirements are met.
- 401(k) with company match.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance options.
- Paid vacation, personal time, and holidays.
- Company-provided tablet and specialty tools.
- Employee discount.
- Support from an established, local service team.
- A family-owned, team-oriented work environment.
