Are you a natural-born problem solver?
RPI Construction Equipment is a fast-growing, family-owned equipment rental and service company specializing in foundation drilling rigs, pile driving machines, and specialty ground-improvement equipment. We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Field Service Technician to join our expert team.
If you thrive on solving complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic challenges, value independence and professionalism, and want to be part of a company that rewards craftsmanship, accountability, and personal growth — we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
• Perform hands-on service, troubleshooting, and repair of drilling rigs, pile drivers, and excavator-based attachments, as well as support equipment such as skid steers and backhoes.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems — engines, gearboxes, pumps, valves, wiring, and CAN-bus circuits.
• Weld and fabricate components as needed to complete field repairs safely and effectively.
• Travel throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic (NJ, PA, NY, CT, MA, VA, MD) with occasional air travel elsewhere in the U.S. and Canada.
• Spend roughly 25% of your time in our brand-new, fully equipped shop for equipment prep and rebuilds.
• Maintain truck inventory and order or restock commonly used parts; keep tools organized and in working condition.
• Document work in RPI’s digital work-order system — recording time, parts used, diagnostics, and customer details in real time.
• Communicate professionally with customers and RPI management; provide timely updates on arrival, progress, and job status.
• Operate safely and respectfully on customer jobsites — complying with all RPI and customer rules.
• Train customers on equipment operation and maintenance as needed.
What You Bring
Experience & Core Skills
• 3+ years of experience in heavy-equipment repair or field service (preferably foundation, piling, or crane equipment).
• Proficiency with mechanical repairs — bearings, seals, gearboxes, and rotating assemblies; ability to identify failure modes and root causes.
• Engine service expertise: preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and component replacement; engine rebuild experience a plus (or willingness to learn).
• Hydraulic systems knowledge: open and closed loop designs, component function, clean replacement techniques, and contamination control.
• Familiarity with hydraulic test gauges and flow meters is a plus.
• Electrical systems proficiency: multimeter use, 24-volt diagnostics, and understanding of fuses, relays, diodes, solenoids, and CAN bus troubleshooting.
• Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics (preferred or willing to learn).
• Welding and fabrication experience: ability to perform field repairs with precision and safety.
• Competence with hand and power tools and a deep respect for proper use and maintenance.
Technical & Administrative Strengths
• Comfortable with laptop and mobile apps for digital work orders and parts tracking.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills — with customers, office staff, and management.
• Strong organizational skills for truck inventory, documentation, and daily updates.
• Self-motivated and disciplined — able to prioritize tasks and work independently under pressure.
• Professional demeanor on every jobsite; represents RPI with integrity and respect.
• Clean driving record and willingness to travel up to 75%.
The RPI Mindset
• A sense of urgency in every task.
• The determination and grit to solve complex technical issues no matter what it takes.
• A structured, disciplined work ethic and commitment to professionalism.
• A desire to be the face of RPI — listening to customers, communicating clearly, and following through on every promise.
