Associate Attorney - Insurance Recovery
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Associate Attorney to join our Insurance Recovery practice. The ideal candidate will handle insurance coverage disputes and recovery matters for corporate and institutional clients, working on contested coverage claims, subrogation, and related litigation. This role focuses on analyzing insurance policies, developing strategic approaches to recovery, managing litigation and dispute resolution, and counseling clients on risk allocation and coverage strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a diverse caseload of insurance recovery matters, including first- and third-party coverage disputes and subrogation claims.
- Conduct detailed coverage analysis and policy review to identify recovery opportunities and defenses.
- Draft and file pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and other litigation documents in state and federal courts.
- Lead fact development, take and defend depositions, and prepare witnesses for testimony.
- Develop case strategy, perform legal research, and prepare memoranda and briefs on complex insurance law issues.
- Negotiate settlements with insurers and opposing counsel, and participate in mediations and alternative dispute resolution processes.
- Advise clients on coverage positions, reservation of rights issues, and potential litigation risks and costs.
- Coordinate with coverage counsel, in-house legal teams, and external experts to support case development and trial preparation.
- Manage client communications, billing, and matter budgets while maintaining high standards of responsiveness and service.
- Supervise and mentor junior attorneys and paralegals, and contribute to business development and client relationship efforts.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active admission to the bar in the hiring jurisdiction (or eligibility to obtain admission).
- 5+ years of litigation experience, with direct experience in insurance recovery or insurance litigation preferred; 3-5 years desirable for mid-level role.
- Demonstrated experience with coverage analysis, policy review, and handling insurance-related disputes and subrogation matters.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills, including drafting motions, briefs, and client advisory opinions.
- Proven ability to manage litigation tasks: discovery, depositions, motion practice, and trial preparation.
- Skilled in dispute resolution, negotiation, and settlement strategy.
- Excellent legal research and analytical skills, with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple matters under deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and maintain client-focused communication and billing practices.
- Prior law firm experience and familiarity with state and federal litigation practice; experience with complex commercial insurance matters is a plus.
