Underground Utility Pipe Layer

Job Description

This role focuses on installing underground utility systems, including reinforced concrete pipe for storm drainage and sanitary sewer mains, in accordance with construction plans and safety standards. You will work as part of a field utility crew to grade and prepare trenches, install and align pipe, and support overall utility construction activities on a variety of civil and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Install reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) for storm drainage systems in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Install sanitary sewer mains, service laterals, manholes, and associated structures.
  • Grade and prepare trenches for pipe installation according to plans, elevations, and grade stakes.
  • Align, join, and seal pipe sections to ensure proper flow, leak-free connections, and overall system integrity.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, utility plans, grades, and specifications to perform accurate installations.
  • Verify pipe elevations, slope, and alignment using lasers, levels, and grade rods.
  • Assist with trench shoring, dewatering, and excavation support activities to maintain safe and stable work areas.
  • Place bedding and backfill materials around installed utilities to specified compaction and coverage requirements.
  • Perform utility tie-ins and connections to existing infrastructure safely and accurately.
  • Identify and avoid conflicts with existing underground utilities during excavation and installation.
  • Follow all OSHA, state, and company safety requirements at all times.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, orderly, and organized job site.
  • Work effectively as part of a utility crew to meet production schedules, quality standards, and project deadlines.
  • Support general labor tasks related to civil, utility, and excavation work as needed.
  • Coordinate with equipment operators, including backhoe and excavator operators, to complete utility installations.

Essential Skills

  • Previous experience in underground utility construction preferred.
  • Experience installing reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), sanitary sewer systems, and storm drainage systems.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans, utility drawings, and grade stakes.
  • Knowledge of trench safety, shoring, and excavation requirements.
  • Ability to use hand tools commonly used in utility construction.
  • Ability to operate or work with pipe lasers to verify line and grade.
  • Ability to use compactors and other compaction equipment for bedding and backfill.
  • Ability to use measuring equipment such as levels and grade rods.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate elevations, alignment, and system performance.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to OSHA and state safety requirements.
  • Reliable transportation to and from job sites.
  • Consistent and dependable attendance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in civil construction, utility construction, or general labor on infrastructure projects.
  • Experience working around or in coordination with heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators.
  • Familiarity with storm drain, sanitary sewer, and other underground utility projects.
  • Comfort working as part of a field crew in changing site and weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel to different project locations as needed within the region.

Work Environment

This is an outdoor, field-based position working on active construction sites. You will work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and changing seasonal environments. The schedule includes some day shifts and some night shifts, with hours that may vary depending on weather conditions and project needs. Work involves trenching, excavation, pipe installation, and coordination with heavy equipment such as backhoes and excavators. You should be prepared for physically demanding tasks, working on uneven terrain, and wearing appropriate construction attire and personal protective equipment at all times.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winston-Salem, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
