Onboarding/Offboarding Manager

A well-established law firm is seeking an experienced Onboarding/Offboarding Manager to oversee the full onboarding and offboarding lifecycle for attorneys and professional staff. This role will work closely with Human Resources, Recruiting, IT, Finance, Facilities, and other internal teams to ensure a seamless experience for new hires and departing employees.

The position will play a key role in attorney and staff integration, with particular emphasis on the onboarding of lateral partners and attorney groups.

Key Responsibilities

Recruiting & Pre-Hire Coordination

  • Partner with HR and Recruiting to manage the transition from offer acceptance through the employee’s start date.
  • Coordinate background checks, conflict checks, onboarding documentation, and other pre-employment requirements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for incoming attorneys and staff.
  • Maintain onboarding pipelines, timelines, and status updates.

Onboarding & Orientation

  • Develop and manage comprehensive onboarding schedules for attorneys and professional staff.
  • Prepare and distribute onboarding materials, policies, handbooks, and related resources.
  • Coordinate first-day logistics, including workspace preparation, technology, systems access, and welcome materials.
  • Schedule and coordinate orientation sessions with HR, IT, Finance, Client Value, and other departments.
  • Arrange introductory meetings with key attorneys, department leaders, and internal stakeholders.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Work closely with IT, Facilities, Finance, HR, and other departments to ensure all onboarding requirements are completed.
  • Coordinate technology access, system setup, credentials, and platform permissions.
  • Monitor completion of required compliance and employment documentation.

Lateral Partner & Attorney Integration

  • Manage the onboarding and integration process for lateral partners and other senior attorneys.
  • Coordinate conflicts clearance, system access, billing arrangements, and client matter transitions.
  • Support integration into appropriate practice groups and internal teams.
  • Oversee implementation of established lateral partner integration protocols.
  • Assist with onboarding initiatives involving lateral groups or strategic expansion efforts.

Training & Development

  • Coordinate training and orientation schedules for new attorneys and staff.
  • Partner with HR, IT, and other departments to deliver onboarding and training programs.
  • Track completion of required training.
  • Maintain and update onboarding resources and materials.

Integration & Early Success

  • Monitor onboarding progress through 30-, 60-, and 90-day milestones.
  • Coordinate follow-up meetings with new hires and relevant stakeholders.
  • Identify and escalate onboarding or integration issues as needed.
  • Recommend improvements to enhance the overall onboarding experience.

Process Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain standardized onboarding procedures, templates, checklists, and workflows.
  • Track key onboarding metrics, including timeliness, completion rates, and employee satisfaction.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, and communication throughout the onboarding process.

Offboarding Management

  • Coordinate the offboarding process for departing attorneys and professional staff.
  • Work with appropriate departments to ensure responsibilities, client matters, documents, technology, and other items are transitioned appropriately.
  • Help ensure an organized and professional departure experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of HR, onboarding, employee integration, or related experience preferred.
  • Prior law firm experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience onboarding attorneys and lateral partners highly desirable.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively across departments and with professionals at all levels of an organization.
