Job Title: Quality Technician

Job Description

The Quality Lab Technician performs in-process inspection and testing of production batches, supports technical lab activities, and assists with production-related tasks on the manufacturing floor. This role ensures product quality by conducting laboratory tests, maintaining accurate batch documentation, and collaborating closely with production teams to resolve issues and keep operations running smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized laboratory environment.
  • Print batch tickets and drum tags for production and ensure they are available when needed.
  • Verify that all batch tickets are fully and accurately completed.
  • Enter batch information into Word and Excel files with a high level of accuracy.
  • Scan batch tickets and maintain an organized electronic database of production records.
  • Issue corrections and adjustments for materials that do not meet viscosity specifications.
  • Perform all required testing for production batches as specified on the batch ticket.
  • Write hold tickets for nonconforming batches and materials and communicate status to appropriate personnel.
  • Conduct 3-day and 30-day retain viscosity checks and document results.
  • Perform final inspection of finished goods as needed to ensure they meet quality standards.
  • Report updates, test results, and any ongoing issues to the next shift’s Lab Technician to ensure smooth handoffs.
  • Operate a forklift when required, following completion of forklift training and certification.
  • Inspect incoming raw materials when needed to verify quality and conformance.
  • Perform dock audits on the production floor to support quality and compliance.
  • Split time between lab and production activities, working approximately 60% in the lab and 40% on the production floor.
  • Participate in mixing, batching, compounding, blending, and related production processes as needed.
  • Support inventory and material handling activities related to batch production and quality control.
  • Use email and other computer tools to communicate, document findings, and coordinate with production and quality teams.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1+ year of production, manufacturing, or related hands-on experience.
  • At least 2+ years of quality, inspection, or closely related experience preferred for full proficiency in the role.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Word, Excel, and email.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow detailed procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Dependable work habits and ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify and address quality or process issues.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work on the production floor and perform both lab and production tasks.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift after training.
  • Experience or comfort with mixing, batching, compounding, chemical handling, blending, and machine operation.
  • Ability to perform quality control, inspection, inventory support, and material handling tasks.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English to follow procedures, safety information, and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including overhead reaching, twisting, turning, pivoting, bending, crouching, standing for 8–10 hour shifts, frequent walking, climbing ladders and stairs, and moving on and off a forklift.
  • Ability to perform cleaning of equipment, products, and floors as part of daily duties.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Quality experience is preferred but not strictly required for candidates with strong related skills.
  • Mobile equipment experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in Statistical Process Control (SPC) and SAP is preferred but not required.
  • Good knowledge of chemistry and math is highly beneficial for understanding batch processes and test results.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Chemistry, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Comfort working in a chemical plant environment with exposure to moving equipment, noise, fumes, vibrations, and dust.
  • Willingness to work varying shift schedules, including potential changes between 8-hour and 10-hour shifts.
  • Willingness to work overtime and occasional mandatory weekends based on business needs.

Work Environment

This role is based in a chemical plant that produces primarily automotive materials in a climate-controlled work environment. You will spend time both in the lab and on the production floor, with exposure to moving equipment, noise, fumes, vibrations, and dust while performing essential functions. The position is contract-to-hire with an initial 90-day period. Shifts typically include 1st shift (5:00am–3:30pm, Monday–Friday) and 3rd shift (11:00pm–7:30am, Sunday–Thursday). There is regular potential for overtime based on business needs, with schedules posted weekly; overtime can include Saturday only or both Saturday and Sunday, and mandatory weekends may be required. You may be scheduled to work weekends based on operational needs or on a voluntary basis. The environment requires frequent walking, climbing ladders and stairs, standing for 8–10 hour shifts, and moving on and off a forklift throughout the shift. Personal protective equipment is provided, including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and other safety gear as needed. Steel-toed shoes are required as part of the dress code.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Evansville, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
