Summary:

GSSC is privately owned and locally operated, seeking an experienced Design Engineer based out of Bloomington to join our growing team! Founded in 1946, GSSC remains one of the largest privately held security companies in the Midwest. Compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, skills, and knowledge.

The Design Engineer is responsible for providing pre-sales and post-sales support to both sales and technical staff on electronic systems by assisting with design, estimating, and quoting system solutions. The Design Engineer is responsible for designing integrated security systems including Access Control, Fire Alarm, IP Video, Intrusion, and various other networking systems.

Design Engineer Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical support to sales and operations teams during both pre-sales and post-sales phases.
  • Participates in joint site surveys with sales staff to assess customer needs and provides technical expertise.
  • Responsible for surveying the customer job site to obtain information on the system environment prior to bid finalization.
  • Assists sales staff in creating sales orders by using Company designated sales forms.
  • Assists the sales department during the sales process by providing drawings for submittals and quotations.
  • Assists the operations department in providing documentation for customer installed systems and internal Company use.
  • Develops comprehensive naming and storage scheme for archiving customer drawings for future retrieval.
  • Designs integrated security solutions tailored to client specifications, codes, and industry best practices.
  • Assists sales and estimating staff by providing support with system design.
  • Works with product manufacturers representatives for system design, support, and registering projects.
  • Prepares system layouts, wiring diagrams, device schedules, and riser diagrams for proposals and submittals.
  • Develops accurate bill of materials (BOMs) and labor estimates to support pricing and proposals.
  • Generates comprehensive project documentation including scope of work, technical specifications, submittal packages, etc.
  • Provides high-level technical support for complex customer service issues and escalated troubleshooting.
  • Manages vendor relationships by addressing product updates, product problems, and high-end troubleshooting issues.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of current and new technologies that the Company offers
  • Updates and integrates as-built drawings into the Company’s ERP system for internal and customer use.
  • Addresses plan review comments for permit submittals from Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Assist with training internal technical or sales staff on new, or existing products.

Design Engineer Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience designing and implementing security and life safety solutions, or related roles
  • Proficiency in security technologies including video surveillance, access control, alarm systems, and software-based security solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of network infrastructure, including LAN/WAN, switches, routers, firewalls, and VPNs.
  • Experience working with security platforms such as Genetec, Brivo, Hanwha, Axis, DMP, Honeywell, Silent Knight, or similar systems.
  • Familiarity with low voltage wiring and power over Ethernet (PoE) systems.
  • Ability to follow GSSC’s Core Values.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or similar software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and effectively interpret general business documentation.
  • Superior customer service skills to communicate with both internal and external customers.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize job duties to meet deadlines.
  • Valid and current drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MN Power Limited (PLT) License
  • NICET Level I (Fire Systems)

Travel:

This position primarily reports to the Bloomington, MN office with occasional travel to client sites for system installation and support.
