About Paw Paw Rentals
Paw Paw Rentals is a locally owned equipment and event rental company serving Paw Paw and the surrounding southwest Michigan area. We rent and maintain a wide range of equipment, including trucks, trailers, skid steers, wood chippers, air compressors, lawn mowers, small engines, and other rental equipment used by homeowners, contractors, and event customers.
We are looking for a skilled, dependable Fleet Mechanic to help keep our equipment safe, reliable, and ready for customers.
Position Summary
The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing Paw Paw Rentals’ fleet of trucks, trailers, rental equipment, and small-engine equipment. This role is critical to keeping equipment available, minimizing downtime, and supporting daily rental and event operations.
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys variety. You will work on many types of equipment instead of doing the same repair every day.
Company tools are provided, so candidates are not required to bring their own personal tool set.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance on company-owned equipment, including trucks, trailers, skid steers, wood chippers, air compressors, lawn mowers, and other rental equipment.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues.
- Inspect equipment and identify maintenance concerns before they become major repairs.
- Maintain accurate service records and repair documentation.
- Follow routine maintenance schedules and equipment inspection procedures.
- Perform tire, brake, suspension, engine, and drivetrain repairs.
- Troubleshoot trailer lighting, wiring, and brake systems.
- Ensure equipment is safe, reliable, clean, and ready for customer use.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
- Assist with equipment preparation and emergency repairs during peak operating periods.
- Diagnose and repair customer small-engine equipment as needed.
- Follow company safety standards and applicable regulations.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a fleet mechanic, diesel mechanic, automotive technician, equipment mechanic, small-engine mechanic, or similar role.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with gas and diesel engines.
- Knowledge of trailer systems, hydraulic equipment, electrical systems, and small-engine repair.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and standard shop equipment.
- Valid driver’s license required, the ability to get a chauffeur's license, and no major moving violations in the last two years.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physical work in a shop environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- State certifications, diesel training, automotive training, or equivalent technical experience.
- Experience maintaining medium-duty trucks, trailers, construction equipment, or rental equipment.
- Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
- Experience with skid steers, compact equipment, lawn equipment, and small engines is a plus.
Compensation
Pay is hourly and based on experience, skill level, reliability, and ability to work independently.
Expected pay range: $25–$30 per hour
Company tools are provided, and no personal tools are required. This allows the mechanic to avoid the cost of supplying and maintaining a large personal tool set.
Please note: Paw Paw Rentals has a seasonal business cycle. During our slower season, typically December through February, scheduled hours may be reduced by up to approximately 25% based on business needs.
Benefits
- Competitive hourly pay based on experience.
- Company-provided tools.
- No personal tools required.
- Paid holidays.
- Paid vacation.
- Opportunities for overtime during peak season.
- Year-round position with seasonal schedule variation.
- Supportive team environment.
- Opportunity to work on a wide variety of equipment.
Schedule
This is generally a Monday through Friday position. Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required during busy periods, emergency repairs, or peak rental season.
