Position Summary

The Transformer Field Technician I plays a key role in supporting field operations related to transformer assembly, oil processing, maintenance, and decommissioning. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals seeking to build a technical career within the transformer service industry. The role involves hands-on mechanical and electrical work, extensive travel, and strict adherence to safety procedures.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Assemble transformer components, including radiators, bushings, conservators, and ancillary hardware.

• Perform degassing, vacuum, and pressure testing using degasification units and other specialized equipment.

• Re-gasket transformer components; fabricate O-rings or gaskets as required for field conditions.

• Assist with transformer teardown, preparation for transport, and dismantling for disposal.

• Identify and troubleshoot basic electrical and mechanical issues in the field.

• Complete assigned daily work orders accurately, maintaining clear documentation of tasks performed.

Requirements:

Experience & Skill Requirements

• Up to three (3) years of experience in transformer service, oil processing, assembly, or related mechanical/electrical work.

• Basic proficiency in computers, including Microsoft Office and online reporting platforms.

• Clear verbal and written communication skills with the ability to follow technical instructions.

• Strong self-motivation, the ability to work independently, and commitment to meeting team goals.


Additional Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

• Willingness to travel up to 80% across the continental United States.

• Ability to pass a DOT physical examination.

• Successful completion of a background check and pre-employment/random drug testing.

• Legal authorization to work in the United States.

• Availability for extended hours, irregular schedules, weekends, and holidays as needed.

• Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds, work at heights greater than 100 feet, operate in confined spaces, and perform outdoor duties in all weather conditions.

• Adequate vision, hearing, and English proficiency to ensure safe communication in high-noise and high-risk environments.


Bonus Skills

Familiarity with basic transformer commissioning tests, such as:

· Insulation resistance testing (e.g., using a Megger)

· Turns ratio testing

· Winding resistance measurement

· Power factor or dissipation factor testing

· Oil sampling and dissolved gas analysis (DGA)

· Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) testing
