Job Title: Fabrication Shop Supervisor

Job Description

The Fabrication Shop Supervisor oversees all aspects of shop-based steel fabrication to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to specification. This role leads a team of fabricators, welders, and machine operators, coordinates workflow across multiple machines and workstations, enforces quality and safety standards, and maintains a productive, efficient, and safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise, mentor, and develop a team of approximately 8–12 shop employees, including fabricators, welders, and machine operators.
  • Assign daily and weekly tasks based on job priorities, project deadlines, and individual skill sets.
  • Conduct regular toolbox talks, safety briefings, and performance reviews to reinforce expectations and support employee development.
  • Review blueprints, fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and material lists to plan and organize workflow.
  • Schedule work sequences to optimize utilization of fabrication equipment such as shears, press brakes, saws, punch presses, and other shop machinery.
  • Coordinate with purchasing and inventory personnel to ensure materials and consumables are available when needed.
  • Enforce dimensional tolerances and welding quality in accordance with AWS D1.1 standards and internal quality procedures.
  • Inspect in-process and finished components for accuracy, fit-up, weld quality, and surface finish, and ensure they meet project specifications.
  • Document and address non-conformances, implement corrective actions, and follow up to prevent recurrence.
  • Enforce OSHA regulations and company safety policies, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and hot work permits.
  • Investigate safety incidents or near misses, maintain safety logs, and lead continuous improvement efforts related to safety.
  • Ensure all welders maintain current certifications and that fabrication equipment is routinely inspected and compliant.
  • Monitor the condition of fabrication machinery, tooling, and equipment, and schedule preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff to prioritize repairs and keep production on schedule.
  • Approve repairs and equipment replacements in consultation with the Shop Manager and within established guidelines.
  • Identify bottlenecks in production and recommend workflow enhancements, layout changes, or process improvements.
  • Lead or participate in Kaizen and 5S initiatives to improve organization, efficiency, and cleanliness in the shop.
  • Train staff on new equipment, software tools such as nesting or CAD/CAM systems, and updated fabrication techniques or processes.
  • Maintain accurate labor and production records and report on daily output, including job progress and completion status.
  • Track job costs, scrap rates, and productivity metrics, and use this data to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Provide timely status updates to Project Managers and Sales teams regarding job progress, potential delays, and resource needs.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5+ years of experience in structural or miscellaneous steel fabrication.
  • At least 2+ years of experience in a supervisory or lead role within a fabrication or similar industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, shop drawings, and weld symbols.
  • Hands-on experience with MIG, Stick, and Flux-core welding processes.
  • Familiarity with structural steel fabrication and welding practices, including adherence to AWS D1.1 standards.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, and motivate a diverse team in a production environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with engineering, quality, and client representatives.
  • Basic proficiency with MS Office applications for reporting, documentation, and communication.
  • Strong focus on safety, including practical knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe work practices in a fabrication shop.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using fabrication estimating or nesting software.
  • Certification as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or other welding certifications (preferred).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 safety training (preferred).
  • CPR and First Aid certifications (preferred).
  • Experience leading or participating in Kaizen, 5S, or other continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements that enhance productivity and reduce scrap.
  • Comfort working across multiple locations and coordinating resources between facilities.

Work Environment

This role is based in a steel fabrication shop environment operating primarily on a first shift schedule from 5am - 130pm with extensions to approximately 3:30 p.m. as needed. Saturday work is generally avoided but may be required depending on workload. The shop features fabrication machinery, multiple welding stations, overhead cranes, forklifts, and related material-handling equipment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $95000.00/yr.
