Position Summary:

Responsibilities include assisting the Director of Aquatics with hiring, training, and supervising lifeguard, swim team, swim lesson, and water fitness staff.

A primary responsibility of this and all other jobs at the JCC is to ensure by whatever rational and reasonable means necessary that each and every member, guest and visitor leaves the JCC feeling just a little better than when they arrived.

Staffing & Supervision

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and supervise swim instructors.
  • Maintain certification logs for all aquatics staff.
  • Complete swim instructor evaluation per session.
  • Hold regularly scheduled staff meetings with swim instructors per session.
  • Assist Director of Aquatics with supervising lifeguard, swim team and water fitness staff.
  • Support Director of Aquatics in facilitating required monthly in-services for all aquatic staff.
  • Function as “Director on Duty” on weekends and evenings as needed.

Aquatics Programming

  • Manage, coordinate, schedule and track Private Swim Lessons.
  • Develop, market, implement, supervise and evaluate comprehensive, creative and progressive aquatics programs and swim lessons for members and non-members.
  • Enter aquatics swim classes into registration program, assists with registration process, and manages rosters.
  • Keep informed of various trends and programs which could impact JCC programs.
  • Work with directors of ECE and Camp to coordinate and schedule swim lessons.
  • Organize class schedule, communicate with and assign participants to the appropriate level and complete and send swim lesson progress report cards mid-session and post session.
  • Monitor safety protocols during classes.
  • Work with marketing team to communicate programs.
  • Assist instructors with participant behavioral issues during lessons.
  • Provide support during group swim lessons.
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of the aquatics program goals and budget.
  • Conduct American Red Cross lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED classes.
  • Conduct Starfish Aquatics Institute Swim Instructor classes.
  • Track participation monthly for private-semi-private swim lessons and by session for group lessons.
  • Communicate effectively with program participants, staff and Director of Aquatics.
  • Distribute and collect program evaluations each session.

Manage Pool Operations and Pool Rentals

  • Conducts weekly required pool maintenance and retains daily pool chemistry and all requisite logs.
  • Provide pool closure notifications and signage.
  • Maintain concise records essential for control, evaluation and reporting purposes.

Direct Service

  • Substitute for swim instructors and/or lifeguards in their absence.

Administrative

  • Process bi-weekly payroll for swim instructor staff.
  • Update staff roster as needed and communicate changes to HR and payroll.
  • Participate in staff meetings with Director of Aquatics regularly.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and professional development opportunities as appropriate.
  • Any additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in aquatics related field preferred.
  • 2+ years Aquatics experience required, experience in pool operations and mechanics preferred.
  • ARC Lifeguard or equivalent Lifeguard certification required or obtained within 3 months.
  • Starfish Aquatics Institute Swim Instructor certification required or obtained within 3 months.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills strongly preferred.
  • ARC Lifeguard Instructor, Starfish Aquatics Institute Instructor Trainer and Pool Operator certification preferred or ability to obtain certification within 12 months required.
  • Knowledge of swim lesson curriculum, staffing and supervision and scheduling.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop recreational programming for all age groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Maintain professional image and manner consistent with the JCC’s mission and goals.

    3. ADA chair lift
    4. Pump rooms
    5. Pool vacuum
  • Chemical test kit to check pool levels
  • Pool chemicals
  • Computer & standard office equipment

Work Environment

This job requires high energy and interaction with staff and members of the community. There is a need for quick decision-making and accountability for actions. May be routinely required to lift/carry/move up to 150 pounds. Exposure to moist/humid environment when lifeguarding indoors; exposure to elements of weather (heat, rain, wind, sun) and pool chemicals. Administrative work requires sitting for long periods, using computer, telephone and other office equipment.
