Job Description

The Maintenance Technician installs, maintains, and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structures, and pipe and electrical systems in a commercial or industrial environment. This role also operates machine tools and assembles parts to fabricate tools, mechanisms, and machines used for both experimental and production purposes, supporting safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and test machinery and equipment regularly to verify proper operation and identify potential issues before failures occur.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions by listening for unusual sounds and collaborating with supervisors and other maintenance personnel to determine root causes.
  • Dismantle defective machines and equipment, remove worn or damaged components, and install new or repaired parts to restore functionality.
  • Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other moving parts to ensure smooth operation and reduce wear.
  • Install and repair electrical apparatus such as transformers, wiring, and electronic components in accordance with safety and electrical standards.
  • Lay out, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment used in production operations.
  • Repair and replace gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related instrumentation to maintain accurate system performance.
  • Install, program, troubleshoot, and repair automated machinery and equipment to support efficient production processes.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and program Omron PLCs to maintain and improve automated systems.
  • Set up and operate machine tools, including lathes, grinders, drills, and milling machines, to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs, fixtures, and tools.
  • Operate cutting torches and welding equipment to cut, join, or repair metal components as needed.
  • Consult with engineers and other technical personnel regarding equipment design, capacity, and intended purpose to support improvements and modifications.
  • Analyze specifications, drawings, sketches, and written instructions to plan work layout, determine materials, and sequence operations effectively.
  • Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering and production requirements.
  • Verify that machined parts and fabricated components conform to specifications using appropriate measurement tools and inspection methods.
  • Install parts and materials such as sheet metal, hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants, and batteries in accordance with technical requirements.
  • Recommend and implement process and equipment improvements through Kaizen and other continuous improvement activities to enhance efficiency and adaptability.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot machining tools and related equipment to minimize downtime and support reliable operations.
  • Perform basic welding tasks when required to support maintenance and fabrication needs.
  • Follow safety rules, operating procedures, and maintenance instructions to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment changes in routine reports and communicate status updates clearly to relevant team members.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery, equipment, and facility systems.
  • Ability to inspect, test, and diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions using both observation and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience dismantling equipment and replacing parts.
  • Proficiency in operating machine tools such as milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders with a focus on precision and accuracy.
  • Solid understanding of tolerances, precision measurements, and verification of part conformance to specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to ensure correct part dimensions and proper assembly.
  • Experience installing and repairing electrical apparatus, including transformers, wiring, and electronic components.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including layout, assembly, installation, and maintenance of pipe systems and related equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, install, program, and repair Omron PLCs and other automated machinery components.
  • Basic welding skills with the ability to perform minor cutting and joining tasks safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of tooling and equipment maintenance, including troubleshooting machining tools to minimize downtime.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees and collaborate with engineers and other technical staff.
  • Basic algebra skills to support measurements, calculations, and technical problem-solving.
  • Ability to interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Capability to work long shifts, including overtime, in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining focus on safety and quality.
  • Physical ability to perform regular standing, walking, lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and handling materials as required by the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university, or one to two years of related experience and training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certificate from a trade school or alternative certification in electrical, mechanical, or welding applications.
  • Familiarity with CNC machines for setup, operation, and performing minor programming adjustments.
  • Experience with precision machining, including grinding and machining of close-tolerance components.
  • Comfort working with technical documentation such as specifications, drawings, sketches, and work instructions.
  • Experience participating in Kaizen or other continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and supporting a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a high-volume production setting.

Work Environment

The role takes place in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment where employees frequently operate and inspect machinery and equipment. The atmosphere is team-oriented, with a strong emphasis on open dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility for safety and performance. Work involves regular standing, walking, sitting, using hands, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and communicating. The position requires regularly lifting and moving up to 100 pounds and frequently lifting or moving more than 100 pounds, with specific vision requirements including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment includes regular exposure to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, vibration, and occasional outside weather conditions. Hearing protection is required due to elevated noise levels. Shifts are typically long and may include mandatory overtime, often 5–6 days per week with 10–12 hour shifts. The primary schedule for this role is 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM on a rotating pattern of four days on and four days off. The pay range for this position is $55848.00 - $66560.00/yr.
