Job Summary

The School Bus Mechanic will work with other mechanics with repairs as needed. Works in a safe manner at all times. Road tests equipment to ensure defects are corrected. May be required to run road service calls for disabled buses, trucks and other vehicles. Responds to emergency and immediate vehicle and equipment problems. Performs regular inspections necessary for basic preventative maintenance; and performs all maintenance. Diagnoses, and repairs buses, trucks, tractors and other garage equipment. Uses diagnostic equipment to assess problems and uses power and hand tools to perform repairs. Performs inspections and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

EDUCATION:
This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.)

LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS:
State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Certification, required

ASE Certification in the following areas is preferred:

Electrical Systems

Suspension and Steering

Brakes

Drivetrains

Diesel Engine Repair

Gasoline Engine Repair

CDL license w/BPS and air brake restriction lifted endorsement, required.

CDL A license, preferred.

MECHANIC EXPERIENCE:
Minimally one year of related work experience in vehicle maintenance and general vehicle repair, required.

Three (3) years of related work experience, preferred.

3-5 years school bus mechanic experience, preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:
Basic knowledge of power and hand tools, mechanical design and fabrication, and use of diagnostic equipment, required.

Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions related to vehicle repair, required.

ABILITIES:
Ability to read and interpret district policies, guidelines, handbook, and government regulations, required.

Ability to read and comprehend safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, required.

Ability to write simple correspondence, required.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams, required.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in gas/arc welding, required.

Ability to communicate effectively using the English language with students and school administrators and staff, required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, required.

Ability to solve practical problems involving several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, required.

Ability to effectively use basic computer software applications, required.

Ability to perform job duties using various types of equipment including but not limited to; hand tools, power tools, precision instruments, pressure gauges, ladders/lifts, etc., required.
