The Department of Public Works is HIRING! An opportunity is currently available for a Maintenance Technician I. This position is responsible for city street, grounds maintenance, and construction work. Work of this nature involves performing more difficult manual construction and maintenance activities associated with the City of Portage properties, city streets, sewers, parks, and cemeteries from April to October. In late fall the position transitions to operation of heavy-duty trucks for leaf pick-up and snow removal. Prior experience in snow plowing, building trades, mowing, and road repairs is preferred. Experience operating a dump truck with an under-body blade is helpful.
Valid Michigan Class "A" CDL with tanker endorsement, and DOT medical card preferred. A Michigan Class "B" CDL with air brakes is required and would require a CDL-A to be obtained within 6 months. Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Applicants must be able to lift objects and tools over 50 pounds and work under adverse weather conditions. A demonstrated work ethic is desired.
The starting rate is $21.47/ hour with an excellent benefits package. Overtime is required for certain months of the year for the City Leaf Clean-up program and Winter Street Maintenance with night/weekend shift requirements. Adjusted work schedule of 3:30 AM -12:00 PM or 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM for winter street maintenance with the potential of a midnight start time for the first shift or midnight end time for the second shift as weather dictates. Opportunities for advancement based on seniority and skill set under UAW Contract.
