Join The Coffee Oasis team as a Direct Care Staff member in our Young Adult Shelter in Tacoma, WA, and be part of a transformative mission that makes a real difference in the community.
This onsite role offers the unique opportunity to engage with young adults experiencing housing instability in a supportive environment, fostering compassion, safety, and meaningful connections.
This position supports the operation of our Young Adult Shelter during its overnight hours. The shelter operates 12-hour shifts, approximately 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., and staff should be available to work evening, overnight, early morning, weekend, and holiday shifts as scheduled.
A Day in the Life
As a Direct Care Staff member, you play an essential role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and success of young adults staying in our Overnight Shelter. During each shift, you help create a safe, stable, and trauma-informed environment while providing supervision, support, crisis response, and encouragement throughout the evening and overnight hours.
On a typical shift, you will:
- Supervise young adults residing in the overnight shelter while maintaining a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed environment.
- Complete resident intake, screening, orientation, and required documentation.
- Respond to crisis situations, shelter phone calls, and walk-in inquiries with professionalism and compassion.
- Administer medications in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Support evening routines and overnight supervision while helping young adults prepare for the day by ensuring they have breakfast and are ready for work, school, appointments, or other scheduled activities.
- Encourage accountability, healthy boundaries, and positive life skills.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the shelter.
- Participate in staff meetings and required training while supporting a collaborative team environment.

Requirements
To thrive as a Direct Care Staff member at The Coffee Oasis, candidates should demonstrate alignment with our mission and possess the necessary skills to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care.
- Commitment to The Coffee Oasis mission, vision, and core values.
- At least 21 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- At least one year of experience working with marginalized populations.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet applications.
- Valid driver's license and proof of personal automobile insurance.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Ability to pass a DCYF background check.
- Completion of Bloodborne Pathogen training.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the shelter during shifts.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to operate computers, complete documentation, and perform daily tasks.
- Ability to reach, bend, and perform routine shelter responsibilities.
- Ability to communicate clearly with young adults, staff, and emergency responders.
- Ability to remain alert, attentive, and responsive throughout 12-hour overnight shifts (approximately 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.) while providing continuous supervision and support in a residential shelter environment.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
- Visual acuity, including close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus while monitoring the environment and completing documentation.

Work Environment
Work is performed at The Coffee Oasis Overnight Shelter, which serves young adults experiencing housing instability. This position requires frequent interaction with residents in a trauma-informed residential setting where crisis intervention, teamwork, and adaptability are essential.
Employees should be comfortable working 12-hour overnight shifts (approximately 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.), including weekends and holidays as scheduled. This role is fully in person and on-site.
Compensation & Benefits
The hourly pay for this position ranges from $22.00 to $24.00.
Employees accrue paid sick leave and paid vacation leave, are eligible to participate in our 401(k) program, and receive café discounts. Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for additional benefits, including Medical, Dental, Vision, Group Life Insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions (when enrolled in an eligible medical plan), paid holidays, and other benefits in accordance with plan eligibility requirements.
