The Press Assistant supports rotary printing operations by working alongside the press operator to ensure accurate, high-quality label production for major retail and grocery brands. This is a hands-on, general labor role that involves working at the end of the press line to handle materials, perform basic quality checks, and assist with changeovers. The position offers a clear training path and strong potential to grow into a full press operator role.

Responsibilities

  • Work at the end of the press line to catch and handle printed materials as they come off the machine.
  • Inspect printed labels and materials for quality, verifying accuracy, print clarity, and overall product standards.
  • Box finished products securely and palletize boxes for storage or shipment.
  • Assist the press operator with changeovers, including loading and unloading large rolls of paper (50+ lbs) into the machine.
  • Help with changing wet inks and performing basic cleaning tasks related to ink changes; work safely with printing inks.
  • Maintain a steady workflow on the production line, ensuring materials move efficiently through the process.
  • Perform general labor and production duties such as packaging, banding, boxing, and assembly as needed.
  • Support machine operation activities under direction, including basic tasks associated with printing presses and production equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including wearing composite-toed or steel-toed shoes during interviews and all working shifts.
  • Work effectively in a loud, fast-paced production environment while remaining focused on quality and productivity.
  • Demonstrate reliability by showing up on time, completing assigned tasks, and supporting team members on shift.
  • Participate in cross-training opportunities to learn additional production tasks and prepare for press operator training.
  • Communicate clearly with press operators and team members about any quality issues, material concerns, or equipment irregularities.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Minimum 6 months of mechanical or mechanically inclined experience, demonstrating comfort working with machinery and tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs independently and handle heavier materials (50+ lbs) with appropriate assistance or equipment.
  • Experience in general production, packaging, or general labor roles such as assembly, inspection, boxing, banding, or machine operation.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, assembly line or production setting with repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to perform basic quality inspection on printed materials and packaging.
  • Strong reliability and work ethic, including consistent on-time attendance and dependable performance verified through references.
  • Willingness to wear composite-toed or steel-toed shoes at all times during interviews and working shifts.
  • Ability to work the listed shift schedule, including long shifts and potential overtime.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in printing or working with printing presses is preferred but not required.
  • 6+ months of press operating or press assistant duties is preferred.
  • Experience with printing press machine operation, printing, or production in a similar environment is a plus.
  • Mechanically inclined mindset with interest in learning how printing presses and production equipment operate.
  • Desire to learn a new skill and pursue career advancement into a press operator role through formal training.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a loud production environment with an ink smell.
  • Openness to cross-training in multiple departments to expand skills and versatility.
  • Comfort performing general labor tasks such as packing, production work, and material handling.

Why Work Here?

Employees benefit from a supportive environment that invests in long-term growth through structured training and cross-training opportunities. A dedicated press operator training program provides a clear path to advance into higher-skilled roles and increased pay. The organization offers weekly pay once hired directly, a 3% 401(k) contribution regardless of employee contribution, and reimbursement for steel-toed shoes after becoming permanent. Team members enjoy overtime opportunities across departments, six standard holidays off plus six floating holidays, and 40 hours of sick time and PTO, supporting both financial stability and work-life balance.

Work Environment

The facility is clean and climate-controlled, providing a comfortable temperature-controlled setting for production work. The production area is loud due to operating machinery, and there is a noticeable ink smell that may not suit everyone. Rotary shifts include: 1st Shift, Monday–Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; 2nd Shift, Monday–Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to midnight; and 3rd Shift, Friday–Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Composite-toed or steel-toed shoes are required for interviews and all working shifts as part of the safety dress code.
