Job Title: Supplier Development Engineer

Job Description

The Supplier Development Engineer blends strong engineering expertise with project and people management skills to ensure that suppliers consistently meet internal and customer quality standards. This role plays a key part in supplier selection, new product launches, and continuous improvement initiatives. The position suits someone who thinks independently, takes initiative and ownership, makes decisive and confident decisions, and communicates clearly, concisely, and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Lead onsite supplier audits and conduct detailed risk assessments to recommend and qualify suppliers.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and suppliers to align specifications, validate processes, and ensure products meet defined quality requirements.
  • Oversee the APQP process and review PPAP submissions, applying AIAG methods such as PFMEA, Control Plans, and Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
  • Provide regular, data-driven reports on supplier performance to internal stakeholders.
  • Support new product development by ensuring supplier readiness, capability, and alignment with launch timelines.
  • Drive cost and delivery improvement initiatives to enhance supplier performance and overall supply chain efficiency.
  • Champion continuous improvement projects both internally and with suppliers to strengthen quality, reliability, and productivity.
  • Communicate and resolve product quality issues found in production in a timely and structured manner.
  • Conduct internal and external audits of quality management systems and products to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Lead problem-solving activities and root cause analysis to eliminate non-conformances and prevent recurrence.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Engineering experience within a manufacturing environment, with a solid understanding of manufacturing processes and/or supply chain fundamentals and how suppliers operate.
  • Working knowledge of APQP, PFMEA, and process management methodologies.
  • Proven project management experience, including planning, coordination, and execution of engineering or quality projects.
  • Quality Management System (QMS) experience, particularly with ISO 9001 or IATF standards.
  • Knowledge of applied metrology, including measurement techniques and equipment used in precision manufacturing.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Experience with statistical analysis for quality and process control.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and assume ownership of projects and outcomes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certification is preferred.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers, customers, and cross-functional internal teams such as engineering, purchasing/procurement, and sales/applications.
  • Familiarity with AIAG tools and documentation related to APQP and PPAP.
  • Comfort working in a precision machining and custom engineered components environment.
  • Interest in professional development and long-term career growth within a quality and supplier development function.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portage, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $36.06 - $40.86/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
