Job Description

Opening in September 2026, Lucania will be a piazza-inspired restaurant for all-day gathering, alive from the first cup of coffee to the last glass of wine, brought to you by the same team as A16.

The Ferry Building has been central to San Francisco's food culture for over 125 years. It’s a place for fresh market offerings, a cup of coffee, a quick meal—a place for people in motion. What it has lacked is a place to stay. Lucania changes that, bringing light, scale, and a steady energy to a once-quiet corner of the building.

Inspired by Southern Italian piazzas, it introduces a continuous rhythm where coffee turns into lunch, aperitivo into dinner, and the room fills as the day unfolds. Lucania will be a place guests can return to at any hour and find it alive, adding a sense of energy and gathering the Ferry Building has not consistently held.

Lucania is the newest addition to DOC Group, a hospitality group currently operating A16 restaurants and Tansy Wines, shaped by years of partnership, investment, and shared commitment to Southern Italian food and culture.

THE ROLE

At Lucania, you will step into a rare opportunity: joining an exceptional leadership team with deep expertise across the kitchen, the bar, and the cellar. You will partner closely with ownership and these leaders — including working directly alongside ownership on the wine program that has made A16 an institution.

You will be on the floor, in the details, and in the big picture all at once: inspiring your team, delighting guests, managing the business, and growing the next generation of hospitality leaders.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Lead and develop a high-performing FOH team — recruiting, training, coaching, and championing them every day
  • Partner with culinary leadership and ownership to drive operational excellence and guest experience
  • Work directly alongside ownership and our corporate team to shape an amazing wine and beverage program for Lucania.
  • Cultivate VIP guest relationships and create personalized, memorable moments that build lasting loyalty
  • Work with our Events team to grow private dining and buy-out business; oversee event staffing, purchasing, and scheduling
  • Own the business: analyze P&L, manage costs, lead staff meetings, participate in leadership meetings, and execute strategic plans
  • Develop and implement FOH training protocols, standardizing curriculum and schedules
  • Manage scheduling, inventory, payroll coordination, tip calculations, and weekly finance measures
  • Set the tone — in daily staff briefings, in how the room feels, and in the example you set

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive restaurant leadership, with at least 3 years in fine dining management
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully managing full-cycle FOH operations: hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, and staff development
  • Strong knowledge of Italian and California wines; ability to lead staff education. Wine certifications are a plus.
  • Proven financial acumen: P&L management, cost controls, forecasting, and reporting
  • Experience developing and executing strategic business plans in collaboration with ownership
  • Strong working knowledge of California employment law and HR practices
  • Current Food Handler’s and ServSafe certifications (or ability to obtain prior to start)
  • High Proficiency in restaurant operations systems (POS, scheduling, inventory management)
  • Experience managing private events, buy-outs, and special programming

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • You lead with hospitality first — you know every guest experience starts with how the team feels
  • You are calm under pressure and decisive when it counts
  • You develop people intentionally, identifying and investing in future leaders
  • You bring creative thinking to programming, events, and guest experience
  • You communicate with clarity and lead with accountability at every level
  • You are strong enough to be kind

THE DETAILS

  • Full-time, exempt 50–60 hours per week including weekends
  • Reports directly to ownership
  • San Francisco, CA · In-person · Relocation required before start date
  • Occasional attendance at off-site restaurant events

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

A16 takes care of its people. We offer:

  • Salary of $115-$125K
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Opportunity to work in a respectful, positive and supportive workplace that encourages excellence, growth and innovation
