Job Summary

The Janitor/Maintenance Technician is responsible for the daily cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of the Shenker Academy campus. This role combines janitorial services with hands‐on maintenance and handyman responsibilities. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail‐oriented, flexible, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast‐paced school environment while meeting physical demands.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Cleaning & Sanitizing

  • Perform daily cleaning tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, wiping glass, and maintaining general cleanliness in all areas.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenish supplies, and ensure all bathrooms remain functional.
  • Address spills, soiled carpets, and urgent cleaning needs promptly.
  • Empty trash in common areas; school grounds, lobby, restrooms.
  • Follow the school’s daily cleaning schedule and complete all required checklists.

Classroom & School Environment Support

  • Assist teachers with immediate cleaning needs such as spills, accidents, or sanitation concerns.
  • Move, assemble and set-up furniture for classrooms, meetings, and school events.
  • Maintain playground cleanliness and inspect for safety hazards.
  • Keep storage areas clean, organized, and accessible for teachers.

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform light repairs and basic maintenance tasks such as plumbing, painting, touch-ups, changing light bulbs, and general handyman work.
  • Use minor hand tools and basic power tools safely and effectively.
  • Hang and mount whiteboards, bulletin boards, pictures, shelving, and classroom fixtures.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections using assigned school checklists.
  • Communicate maintenance needs, priorities, and timelines clearly with administration.

Safety, Licensing & Compliance

  • Follow all school safety standards and procedures, including proper use and storage of cleaning supplies.
  • Adhere to OSHA and Health Department guidelines and maintain safe work practices.
  • Report any unsafe conditions, facility hazards, or equipment issues immediately.
  • Maintain janitorial closest, maintenance rooms, and storage areas in a clean, organized and OSHA compliant manner, including proper chemical usage and storage.
  • Support drills and safety inspections by ensuring all assigned areas and equipment function properly.

Campus Operations & Logistics

  • Assist with building opening and/or closing duties as assigned.
  • Restock essential supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and liners.
  • Maintain cleaning and maintenance inventory and notify administration when supplies need replenishing.
  • Conduct occasional school-related errands such as supply pick-ups.

Team Collaboration

  • Respond promptly and respectfully to maintenance and cleaning requests from staff and administration.
  • Maintain a professional and supportive presence on campus.
  • Be flexible and adaptable, responding to changing priorities throughout the day.
  • Work effectively as part of the facilities team to ensure smooth daily operations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience in janitorial, custodial, or maintenance work preferred.
  • Ability to follow daily schedules, routines, and cleaning/maintenance checklists.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, painting, repairs, and general handyman tasks.
  • Ability to lift, bend, carry, move furniture, and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to move and reposition classroom furniture, equipment and supplies.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
  • Reliable, punctual, trustworthy, and able to work independently.
  • Valid driver’s license and DMV driving record (last 3 years).
