Job DescriptionJob Title: Porter
Job Description
The porter works in a freezer warehouse environment and focuses on maintaining clean, clear, and safe aisles so order selectors can operate equipment without obstruction. This role involves routine janitorial and cleaning tasks, including sweeping with a push broom and removing boxes and trash from warehouse aisles.
Responsibilities
- Sweep warehouse aisles using a push broom to maintain clean and clear walking and equipment paths.
- Pick up boxes, packaging materials, and trash from aisles and work areas to prevent obstructions.
- Perform general janitorial and cleaning duties throughout the freezer warehouse as assigned.
- Remove trash and debris from designated areas and dispose of it in appropriate containers.
- Maintain a safe environment for order selectors and other warehouse staff by keeping floors and aisles free of hazards.
- Follow all facility safety guidelines and procedures while working in low-temperature environments.
- Use provided personal protective equipment (PPE), including freezer suit, face mask, gloves, and jacket, as required.
- Coordinate with team members and follow directions from supervisors to meet daily cleaning and housekeeping standards.
- Arrive on time and work the full scheduled shift from 3:00 p.m. until end of production, typically about eight hours.
- Work all scheduled weekend days as part of the regular shift pattern.
Essential Skills
- Experience performing custodial or janitorial duties in an industrial or warehouse environment.
- Ability to safely and effectively sweep large areas using a push broom.
- Capability to perform trash removal and general cleaning tasks on a continuous basis.
- Comfort working in a freezer warehouse with temperatures ranging from approximately -10 to -20 degrees.
- Reliability in working all scheduled weekend shifts and completing a full shift from afternoon to end of production.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift boxes and trash throughout an eight-hour shift.
- Willingness to wear required freezer PPE, including suit, face mask, gloves, and jacket.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a hazard-free work area.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Prior custodial or trash removal experience in a warehouse or similar setting.
- Comfort communicating with a team that primarily speaks Spanish; Spanish language skills are welcome.
- Ownership of composite toe shoes suitable for freezer environments (steel toe shoes are not permitted due to safety concerns).
- Interest in converting from contract to a permanent role after successful performance.
- Strong attendance record and commitment to punctuality, supporting eligibility for attendance-based incentives once permanent.
Why Work Here?
You join a supportive warehouse team where collaboration and clear communication are valued, including a bilingual environment that welcomes Spanish speakers. After the contract period, you have the opportunity to transition to a permanent role, providing long-term stability and growth. As a permanent employee, you can earn attractive perfect attendance bonuses that significantly increase your hourly pay on weekdays and weekends. The organization offers a structured work schedule with predictable hours and provides the specialized cold-weather gear needed to work comfortably in the freezer environment.
Work Environment
The role is based in a freezer warehouse that distributes ice cream, frozen foods, seafood, and other products typically found in grocery freezer sections. Some rooms are maintained at approximately -20 degrees, while others are around -10 degrees, requiring continuous work in cold conditions. The standard shift runs from 3:00 p.m. until the end of production, typically an eight-hour day with little to no overtime, and includes required weekend work. Contractors receive a freezer suit, face mask, gloves, and jacket, and must supply their own composite toe shoes because steel toe footwear can freeze and is not safe in this environment. The current team primarily speaks Spanish, with bilingual support available, creating a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere focused on safety and efficiency.
