Job Summary
The Horticulturist at GCC is responsible for maintaining the health and aesthetic appeal of the golf course’s landscapes. This role involves managing turf grass, ornamental plants, and other horticultural elements to ensure optimal playing conditions and enhance the overall beauty of the facility.
Essential Duties include, but are not limited to:
Trust and Teamwork
- Work closely with the superintendent and grounds crew to maintain the grounds and landscaping, ensuring a cohesive effort towards achieving the club’s aesthetic goals
- Demonstrate trustworthiness and reliability in executing assigned tasks, fostering a sense of dependability within the team
- Offer assistance to colleagues when needed, fostering an environment of mutual support and cooperation
- Assist in training and supervising the grounds crew in horticultural best practices and safety procedures
Innovation:
- Research and implement sustainable practices to improve plant health and reduce environmental impact
- Approach challenges creatively, finding innovative solutions to enhance the overall appearance and health of the club grounds
- Embrace new technologies and techniques in horticulture, constantly seeking ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness in maintenance practices
Effective Communication:
- Communicate openly and effectively with team members, ensuring everyone is informed and aligned with the goals and tasks at hand
- Provide constructive feedback and actively seek feedback from others to improve processes and outcomes
- Prepare reports on plant health, soil conditions, and landscaping projects for management review
Balance and Appreciation:
- Ensure proper irrigation and fertilization practices are in place to maintain healthy plant life
- Monitor and manage pest and disease control to protect the golf course’s landscape
- Recognize and appreciate the efforts of team members, fostering a culture of gratitude and acknowledgement for contributions to the club’s success
- Support initiatives that prioritize the well-being of employees, including physical and mental health programs, to ensure a balanced and fulfilling work environment
Education and/or Experience
- 2+ years of horticulture experience in a golf course setting, required
- Bachelor’s degree and/or industry certification in Horticulture, Botany, or Plant Science, preferred
- 3-5 years of horticulture experience, preferably in a relevant setting such as botanical gardens, nurseries, landscaping or agriculture organizations
Job Knowledge, Core Competencies and Expectations
- Understanding of plant biology, physiology and taxonomy
- Knowledge of plant identification, growth habits and cultural requirements
- Knowledge and understanding of plant care, including watering, pruning, fertilizing and pest management
- Experience operating and maintaining horticultural equipment and machinery
- Ability to diagnose and address plant diseases, pests and other issues
- Ability to work with and communicate effectively with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds
- Ability to convey complex horticultural concepts in a clear and understandable manner
- Self-directed, team player and detail-oriented
- Keen observation skills to identify subtle changes in plant health or landscape appearance
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and precision in all tasks
Physical Requirements
- Ability to withstand working in outdoor conditions including heat/humidity, cold temperatures and/or wet conditions
- Ability to frequently lift 50lbs+
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects consistently
- Must have fine motor skills and manual dexterity to handle small plants, tools and equipment with precision

- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- Must be 21 years of age or older
