Job Description: Network & Systems Engineer – Field Operations
Location: Washington, DC area (Hybrid: 2–3 days in office when not traveling)
Contract Duration: 6 months contract-to-hire
Travel: Up to 60%
We are seeking a hands-on Network & Systems Engineer to support distributed field locations across the region. This role requires approximately 60% travel and focuses on onsite deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network and server infrastructure. The engineer will play a key role in ensuring reliable connectivity, system performance, and operational continuity across remote sites.
Key Responsibilities
Network & Infrastructure Support
- Install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points at field locations
- Perform onsite troubleshooting of connectivity, performance, and hardware issues to minimize downtime
- Support LAN/WAN environments, routing, switching, VPN connectivity, and network security configurations
- Conduct network upgrades, equipment replacements, and infrastructure improvements as needed
Systems Administration & Deployment
- Install, configure, and support Windows and Linux servers in distributed environments
- Assist with server provisioning, patching, upgrades, and performance monitoring
- Support endpoint deployment, imaging, and system configuration activities
- Maintain documentation for configurations, deployments, and incident resolutions
Operations & Incident Response
- Provide onsite and remote incident response for network and system outages
- Coordinate with centralized IT, security, and operations teams to resolve complex technical issues
- Support infrastructure monitoring and ensure systems meet availability and performance standards
- Participate in rollout projects, migrations, and site buildouts
Collaboration & Travel
- Travel extensively to field locations for installations, upgrades, and support engagements
- Work closely with project managers, network teams, and local stakeholders to ensure successful deployments
- Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical teams
Qualifications
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in Network Operations (2–4+ years preferred overall network/systems experience)
- Hands-on experience with routing, switching, firewalls, and wireless networking technologies
- Experience supporting Windows and/or Linux server environments
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in both network and system domains
- Ability to work independently in field environments and manage multiple site priorities
- Willingness and flexibility to travel up to 60%
Preferred
- Any networking certification (CCNA, Network+, or equivalent)
- Experience supporting distributed or multi-site environments
- Exposure to infrastructure deployments, upgrades, or migration projects.
