Mechanic 1

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Shop Foreman, the Mechanic 1 is responsible for performing preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs on trailers for transport and spreading services. The Mechanic 1 must be detail-oriented, with an understanding of mechanic best practices. This position must thrive in an environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and community oriented. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The Mechanic 1 must have the ability to work independently on projects as well as in a team environment, from conception to completion, and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities and projects.
Position Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance including, but not limited to:
- Lube, oil, and filter changes.
- Oil seals.
- Brakes
- Tires
- Suspension and chassis
- Roger pump
- Repair or replace malfunctioning parts and systems such as brake pads, belts, water pumps, transmissions, and other mechanical parts.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair pneumatic and mechanical systems.
- Proper handling of hazardous waste.
- Perform welding, as needed.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- High School education or equivalent
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
- Ability to read service and repair manuals.
- Ability to read work orders.
- Ability to perform repairs in a timely fashion.
- Good organization, planning, leadership, and communication skills.
- Will be working closely with drivers, vendors, and dispatch to keep track of trailer services, inspections, routine maintenance, and inventory.
- Good housekeeping skills.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present.
- Much have enough vision to inspect repair work.
