The Field Crew Chief leads field survey crews, oversees on-site data collection and staking, enforces safety and quality standards, and coordinates closely with project managers and office staff to deliver accurate survey products on schedule. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong technical skills, crew management experience, and excellent judgment in the field.


Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Assign daily tasks, manage crew schedules, and ensure efficient field workflows.
  • Train new crew members on equipment, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain professional conduct and represent CSE PC on client sites.

Field Surveying & Technical Work

  • Plan and execute boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction staking, as-built, and route surveys.
  • Set up and operate surveying instruments: total stations, robotic total stations, GNSS/GPS receivers, levels, and data collectors.
  • Perform precise measurements, control traverses, and establish survey control.
  • Conduct site reconnaissance and prepare field notes and sketches.

Quality Assurance & Documentation

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of field data; perform on-site checks and QA/QC.
  • Prepare and maintain clear, legible field notes and electronic data files.
  • Coordinate data transfer to CAD/GIS staff; verify processed data and final deliverables.
  • Review and sign off on fieldwork before submission to project managers.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce OSHA and company safety policies; conduct toolbox talks and pre-job safety briefings.
  • Maintain safe operation of vehicles and equipment; ensure PPE use.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot field equipment; coordinate repairs and replacements.
  • Manage field supplies and ensure vehicles and trailers are stocked and organized.

Administrative

  • Complete time sheets, equipment logs, and field reports accurately and on time.
  • Assist with estimating field time and resources for proposals when requested.
