Location: Washington, D.C. (Remote optional)

Direct Counsel is seeking an experienced Consumer Financial Products & Services Attorney to join a premier global law firm in its Washington, D.C. office. This position may be structured as either a Contract Attorney or Staff Attorney role. The ideal candidate will have 15+ years of experience providing regulatory and compliance advice related to consumer financial products and services.

Position Overview

The attorney will support a highly regarded Consumer Financial Services team, advising on complex regulatory, compliance, and operational matters across the full range of consumer financial products. Significant expertise in residential mortgage origination and servicing is essential.

This role offers the flexibility for remote work, though candidates must be admitted and in good standing with the D.C. Bar.

Key Responsibilities & Expertise

The successful candidate must have substantial experience advising on federal and state regulatory issues impacting consumer financial products and services, including:

  • Providing regulatory and compliance guidance on consumer financial products and services

  • Advising on major federal consumer protection laws and their state counterparts, including:

    • TILA (Truth in Lending Act)

    • RESPA (Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act)

    • ECOA (Equal Credit Opportunity Act)

    • FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act)

    • HOEPA (Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act)

    • EFTA (Electronic Fund Transfer Act)

  • Deep expertise in residential mortgage origination and servicing

  • Additional experience with credit cards and auto lending/servicing strongly preferred

  • Advising internal stakeholders and clients on regulatory developments, compliance programs, and risk mitigation

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience advising on consumer financial products and services regulations

  • Strong subject-matter expertise in mortgage origination, mortgage servicing, and consumer lending

  • Ability to provide practical, business-oriented guidance on federal and state consumer financial laws

  • Admission and good standing with the D.C. Bar

  • Excellent communication and analytical skills

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment

  • Remote-work capable

Compensation

  • Expected Salary Range: $82,000 – $142,000 (annual)
    Actual compensation will depend on experience, seniority, and other relevant factors.
