Job Summary
Reporting to the Camp Director, the Camp Manager is responsible managing summer camp and Club programming. This includes managing logistics for overnight camp, day camp, and Club relationships. The Camp Manager supervises a seasonal program team of up to 40 staff during the summer months and full-time, year-round AmeriCorps volunteers. The Camp Manager is responsible for daily operations with the primary focus for programs and service delivery, training and supervision of staff, campers and staff recruitment, and volunteer support.
Responsibilities:
BGCGM Culture
- Demonstrate and communicate the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee (BGCGM) philosophy, objectives, standards and programs through all methods available to campers, their parents, staff members, volunteers and the general public. Provide quality program activities that are inclusive, welcoming, respectful and responsive to the diversity of members, families and community.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with BGCGM Club Managers and registrars to enhance camp participation and assist Clubs when needed.
Leadership
- Implement activities and events on annual camp calendar
- Provide support and model positivity to staff in the management of all camp activities and events.
- Provide quality program activities and experiences that promotes Camp values.
- Promote and support camper-initiated and camper-lead activities. Foster an environment that offers choices, incorporates team building and promotes a sense of belonging and group identity for members.
- Monitor work assigned to staff and volunteers, providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal.
- Supervise the overnight camp program during the summer months
Human Resource Management
- Serve as hiring manager for seasonal hiring including scheduling interviews, reference checks, maintaining hiring spreadsheet and communication with HR Department
- Manages the staff and volunteers according to the practices and policies developed by BGCGM.
- Hire, train supervise and evaluate seasonal staff, and year-round AmeriCorps members. Conduct weekly meetings with staff for timely communications.
- Participate in required trainings by the BGCGM, American Camp Association Standards, County, State and/or funder.
- Responsible for the compliance training requirements/regulations of American Camp Association and State Licensing Code ATCP.78.
- Assist with documentation and monitoring of ACA standards and ATCP.78 code to ensure year-round compliance.
Managing a Safe and Positive Environment
- Understand and follow the BGCGM Member Care Manual policies and procedures to include but not limited to conduct of member policies, supervision of members policies, employee to member policies, member safety polices, child abuse and neglect policies, member health policies, transportation and field trips policies, the club safety/contingency plan, and the procedures for reporting incidents/accidents during program hours.
- Assure program safety and safety of staff, volunteers, visitors, members and daily operations. Communicate emergency procedures to all using facility.
- Ensure proper documentation of all incidents related to program and event participation
- Develop special programs and projects that highlight environmental education and BGCA Core programs to diverse groups primarily youth ages 7-17years old
- Develop a system to train, review and document skills mastery of summer camp staff
- Oversee summer Club field trips, provide programming and recruit campers from Club locations, and develop strong relationships with Club Managers.
Program Planning and Management
- Organizes, manages and supervises the daily operations of Overnight summer camp
- Leads, creates and evaluates Program development and implementation for summer camp.
- Provide opportunities to engage and support the families of members, build reciprocal relationships with communities, volunteers and organizations to support program goals.
- Maintains accurate documentation of all camp attendance and ensure it is updated at least monthly
- Provide training sessions and training schedule for seasonal and hourly hires.
Community Collaboration and Partnerships
- Build reciprocal relationships with communities, schools, volunteers and organizations to support program goals.
- Provide opportunities to engage and support the families of members.
Camp Operation and Administration
- Responsible to adhere to all BGCGM administrative policies and processes to include but not limited to Human Resources, Finance, Grants, Development & Marketing.
- Develop and maintain handbooks and communication for camp families and camp staff.
- Work within compliance of grants as awarded to Camp Whitcomb/Mason, such as the AmeriCorps grant.
Education and/or Certification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required or 5 years of experience supervising youth programming
- Certifications required or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment:
- Lifeguard certification preferred
- ABEE Ropes Course Level 1 Certification preferred
- NASP Archery Certification program preferred
Skills and Experience:
- At least two years of experience directly related to youth programming and staff supervision
- Ability to keep youth ages 7-17 enthusiastically engaged
- Experience motivating, supporting and supervising young adults
- Highly organized with attention to detail
- Works effectively with families from a variety of diverse backgrounds
- Good written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with campers, parents, venders, donors and volunteers
- Understands basic benchmarks for member growth and development
- Ability to articulate program goals and understand how specific activities support those goals
- Understands confidentiality guidelines and protects children, youth, and family confidentiality
- Appreciates new ideas and learning opportunity

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to touch, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Employee must have the ability to work in all seasons of weather outside and walk up to .5 mile over uneven terrain. Capable of appropriate and sustained mental, emotional and social interactions in our constantly changing, youth-centered and community living camp setting.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but peaks high during all-camp functions and meals. Throughout the year the employee is working in spaces with and without air conditioning and working in close proximity to team members. During the summer months the Camp Manager will have their own living space with private bathroom.
Monday - Friday 8:00 - 4:30 p.m. during school year with nights and weekends as needed for programming.
Sunday 6:30 p.m. - Friday 5:30 p.m. during summer camp programming with occasional summer Saturday as needed.
