CLASSIFICATION TITLE: INTERN, ENGINEERING
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:
The purpose of this classification is to assist the engineering staff with basic inspection and clerical work. Assistance with measurements and photographing, and qualitative judgments on pavement condition, including type and extent of defects. Inspection will require using basic tools such as a measuring tape and wheel and inputting the data in a GIS system using a tablet. Clerical work will include the organization of files, both hard copy and digital. May also include operating a scanner to convert hard copy plan sheets to digital files. There are opportunities to learn basic drafting and GIS database management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assists in pavement, stormwater pipes, and ditch evaluations using a standard checklist and evaluation criteria.
- Collects data and documents conditions in a digital database using a tablet, tape measure, and measuring wheel.
- Geolocates city-maintained infrastructure, including roads, ditches, culverts, meters, and buried utilities with a hand-held GPS collector unit.
- Assists in the organization of engineering and construction records, including plans and specifications, reports, and databases. Scans hard copy plans into a digital database.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs other related duties as assigned, including good housekeeping, cleaning, and maintaining engineering equipment, vehicles, and work areas. May assists with public outreach presentations.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED.
Enrolled in a post-secondary education, academic or technical school program.
Have a basic understanding of computer systems, including completing online surveys, and basic Excel. Computer-assisted drafting (CAD) or Geographic Information System (GIS) experience is preferred.
Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
