Summary

SFJAZZ is looking for an Associate Director of Development to provide strategic leadership in cultivating and soliciting individual donors to grow unrestricted support for the organization, while also promoting targeted funding opportunities for key programs, projects, and initiatives. This role is responsible for managing a portfolio of members, Leaders Circle donors, prospects, and lapsed supporters, with a goal of raising approximately $3 million annually. The ideal candidate excels at identifying and engaging new donors, has strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and works effectively across departments to build and execute strategic fundraising plans.


The Associate Director will steward their own portfolio of Leaders Circle donors and play a key role in supporting SFJAZZ leadership in cultivating high-level donor relationships. They will also take initiative in promoting Membership and Leaders Circle opportunities both internally and externally, helping to create a compelling vision for donors about the impact their investment has on the organization and the broader jazz community. This is a critical leadership role on the development team, suited for someone with a passion for donor engagement, strategic thinking, and the transformative power of music.


Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the Director of Development, leads strategy for annual giving, special fundraising initiatives, and new philanthropy initiatives, and manages a team of gift officers with portfolios with a capacity of more than $1 million each.
  • Ensures the Individual Giving program sets aggressive targets and leads the Individual Giving Team to raise approximately $4 million or more annually, including the Gala.
  • Facilitates regular strategy meetings using move management techniques to secure meaningful gifts and build relationships.
  • Manages a portfolio of at least 100 high-capacity Leaders Circle Members with a focus on gifts of $10,000+ annually, including personal solicitation of annual fund, Gala, designated, and/or endowment campaign gifts.
  • Supports the DoDs leadership of the Development Committee and supports committee members in their assignments.
  • Manages donor and prospect research.
  • Tracks cultivation and stewardship activities for their portfolio in the Tessitura database.
  • Represents SFJAZZ at concerts, in the community, and at donor events.


Program Management

  • Manages mail and email campaigns to upgrade, renew, reinstate, and acquire Leaders Circle donors.
  • Writes appeals, cultivation and stewardship communications, and correspondence.
  • Works closely with the Special Events Team to design and execute 10-15 stewardship and cultivation events annually.
  • Oversees and participates in the fulfillment of Leaders Circle benefits and recognition, including Concert Sponsorships.
  • Collaborates with the Memberships and Donor Services Manager to ensure coordination and continuity of messaging across individual giving and to develop strategies and systems for identifying prospects and upgrading Members into the Leaders Circle.
  • Facilitates monthly Development communications strategy meetings and collaborates with the Development Communications Manager to create the Development communications calendar.
  • Collaborates with Marketing or external consultants to create marketing and fundraising materials, including brochures, direct mail, and more.

Supervisory and Administrative

  • Supervises and supports the professional development of Major Gifts Officers.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years of proven organizational, supervisory, and fundraising leadership experience is essential.
  • A successful record of conceptualizing and executing fundraising plans across donor categories (individual giving, foundation, and government support) is required.
  • Strong communication skills to proactively inform the Development team of progress, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising, ticketing, and patron services.
  • Proven success in managing portfolios of 100+ donors and demonstrated achievement in providing superior service and producing excellent financial results from patrons.
  • Proven track record of identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts from major donors.
  • Exemplary stakeholder awareness, confidentiality, diplomacy, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential issues, offering solutions to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
  • Ability to establish working relationships and interact effectively with a wide range of people internally and externally.
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteer leadership and senior staff, involving them, as appropriate, in the cultivation and solicitation process for major donors.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • 3-5 Years of Tessitura, proficient with MS Office and Asana.

Working Conditions:

This position requires a minimum of 4 days in the office, with frequent work during evenings and weekends within the San Francisco Bay Area. The potential for long hours during critical periods such as Gala, Festival weeks, and other special events, including evening membership and donor events (LCLs and LPs), occasional to frequent work during evenings and weekends, in addition to standing for long periods of time.
