Reports to: General Manager of the Nursery

Introduction:

Foxborough Nursery is currently looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable grower to join our team on a full time basis. Our beautiful and historic farm in the Northeast corner of Maryland, boasts over 200 pristine irrigated acres, featuring more than 700 rare and exceptional varieties of woody ornamentals. Join us at the forefront of the nursery business as we bring new plant introductions to market at a premium specimen grade. Learn the time-honored art of grafting in our own propagation facility comprised of three acres of greenhouses surrounded by an unparalleled collection of dwarf and unusual plants. We are located less than an hour from Baltimore and 1.5 hours from Philadelphia and Washington, DC. We supply the finest quality B&B material up and down the East Coast. Job Duties may Include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing containerized and field plant production including potting, staking, pruning, appropriate spacing, watering, fertilization, and integrated pest management.
  • Monitoring the premises and applying critical thinking to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Operating various equipment including tractors, skid loaders, XUV’s etc.
  • Complying with company policies and regulations.

Assisting in:

  • the management and production of rooted cuttings, fresh grafts, and container liners and field stock.
  • the maintenance of all facilities and equipment, including the infrastructure of irrigation.
  • planning field lay-out for successional planting.
  • soil management, taking soil samples, utilizing the analyses to make decisions regarding nutrient management and soil amendments.
  • the safe application of chemicals for fertilization, weed, and pest control.
  • performing seasonally appropriate pruning and staking.
  • order fulfillment. This includes grading, tagging, digging and loading of trees.
  • the detailed record keeping of all of the above.

Requirements:

  • Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor’s or two-year A.A.S. degree in Horticulture or a closely related discipline..
  • Candidates with substantial nursery industry experience may qualify without a degree.
  • Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written) in English, with bilingual abilities in Spanish desired.
  • Time management skills
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Most of the plant material begins as a rooted cutting or fresh graft produced in Foxborough Nursery's own propagation and container area. The majority of our liners are then planted out in our fields for future harvesting as specimen grade plants. Mature dwarf and larger sizes of many varieties are available.
