GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide grounds keeping, landscaping, and related maintenance services for the County’s Aeronautical operations. This position is responsible for maintaining the airport property and equipment, ensuring everything is operational and ready for daily activities. This position typically performs a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, transplanting, weeding, thinning, pruning, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, and installation of mortar less segmental concrete masonry wall units. Additional duties include opening and cleaning the building for travelers, assisting linemen with tasks, and providing customer service. This role involves various maintenance activities, from equipment upkeep to repairing fences and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the airport grounds.

  • Maintains grounds of property using hand or power tools or equipment.
  • Manually plants and cultivates horticultural specialties.
  • Clears debris, brush, and other obstructions.
  • Picks up litter at gate entry and along Airport Road/Shiloh Road.
  • Applies fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, as needed.
  • Repairs fences, as needed.
  • Maintains irrigation systems.
  • Acts as custodian of buildings, including keeping bathrooms and inside the FBO cleaned.
  • Evaluates the status of equipment and facilities, and schedules needed repairs or replacement.
  • Assists airport attendants with aeronautical duties, in certain circumstances,
  • Provides customer Service.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance of ground equipment.
  • Performs runway inspections and repairs runway and taxiway lights.
  • Cross trains if needed and participates in Airport special projects/events.
  • Conducts runway inspection and repairs runway and taxiway lights.
  • Blows off sidewalks and parking lot.
  • Cleans shop and shed.
  • Organizes and manages chemicals.
  • Checks fence lines and repairs areas to prevent critter entry.
  • Changes light bulbs in taxi and runway lights.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general landscaping techniques and irrigation systems.

Ability to operate all grounds keeping and related equipment.

Ability to use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, and knives.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Required: Valid driver's license.

Preferred: SC Herbicide Applicator Licenses.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a demanding outdoor work environment; may encounter weather, noise, dust, burn hazards, fumes, odors, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, moving mechanical parts, and/or vibrations.
