Sandblaster
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Sandblaster to prepare and clean metal surfaces, equipment, structures, and components using abrasive blasting equipment. The Sandblaster is responsible for removing rust, scale, paint, coatings, and other surface contaminants to achieve the required surface profile for painting, coating, repair, or fabrication.
This position requires attention to detail, the ability to work safely around industrial equipment, and a willingness to work in demanding environments. The ideal candidate is reliable, follows instructions, and takes pride in producing quality work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate abrasive blasting equipment, including blast pots, hoses, nozzles, air compressors, and related equipment.
- Prepare metal surfaces by removing rust, paint, scale, corrosion, and other contaminants.
- Inspect surfaces before and after blasting to ensure required cleanliness and surface preparation standards are met.
- Set up, inspect, and maintain blasting equipment and work areas.
- Load and handle abrasive blasting media as required.
- Mask or protect areas that should not be blasted.
- Maintain proper air pressure and blasting techniques for the material and surface being prepared.
- Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance of blasting equipment.
- Assist with equipment preparation, material handling, cleanup, and other shop or field duties as needed.
- Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including supplied-air respirators and blasting protective gear.
- Follow all company, site, OSHA, and applicable safety procedures.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and potential hazards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Work cooperatively with painters, welders, fabricators, equipment operators, supervisors, and other crew members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous sandblasting, abrasive blasting, industrial surface preparation, painting, fabrication, or related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of abrasive blasting equipment and surface preparation methods is preferred.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools and industrial equipment.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Dependable attendance and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to follow established safety procedures at all times.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or varying schedules when required.
- Valid driver's license may be required depending on jobsite responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to handle and control blasting hoses and equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to wear a blasting hood, respirator, protective clothing, and other required PPE.
- Ability to work in confined or elevated areas when properly trained and authorized.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in industrial and outdoor environments.
Work Environment
Work may be performed in fabrication shops, industrial facilities, equipment yards, and field locations. Employees may be exposed to dust, noise, vibration, changing temperatures, outdoor weather conditions, and active industrial equipment. Proper PPE and established safety procedures must be followed at all times.
Preferred Experience
Experience with abrasive blasting, industrial painting, surface preparation, structural steel, heavy equipment, mining equipment, fabrication, or similar industrial work is preferred.
