JOB TITLE: ATHLETIC SCOREKEEPER
Reports To: Recreation Coordinator
Type: Part Time
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Candidate must be at least 15 years of age and working toward High School Diploma or G.E.D. Experience with scorekeeping is preferred.
SUMMARY
Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation is seeking an Athletic Scorekeeper to keep score during our athletic programs (including but not limited to Basketball, Volleyball and Futsal) offered to the residents of Berkeley County. Programs run out of two recreation centers, Berkeley 2000 (Martinsburg) and W. Randy Smith Center (Inwood). Athletic Scorekeepers play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our events.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to handle a fast-paced environment.
- Team player who works well in team setting and individually.
- Able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUITES AND REPONSIBILITES include the following:
- Maintaining Accurate Game Records:
- Operate the scoreboard and manage the official game time and score.
- Keep statistics accurate on player performance during the game.
- Record the score in both electronic and paper formats, depending on the event requirements.
- Track playing time for all players, depending on the event requirement.
- Collaboration and Compliance:
- Work closely with game officials to ensure rules are followed and the contest remains fair.
- Maintain official team rosters and verify player eligibility, including checking suspension lists prior to the game.
- Equipment Setup and Monitoring:
- Set up and inspect scoring equipment before the event.
- Identify and report any maintenance or safety issues to supervisory staff for prompt resolution.
- Skill Development and Communication:
- Use effective oral communication and problem-solving skills in fast-paced game environments.
- Clearly communicate with referees, coaches, and event staff to support the smooth operation of each game.
- Perform other related duties as required.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Completes daily duties with efficiency and minimal supervision.
COMMUNICATION VERBAL AND WRITTEN
A clear communicator who shares information with supervisor, team-members, and others within the organization to contribute to the effective operation of the whole organization. Must demonstrate the ability to work under pressure in a pleasant and courteous manner, handle differences of opinion in a businesslike fashion, follow instructions conscientiously, and function as a team member, helping the group effort. Must communicate expectations and procedures clearly to team members to maintain smooth operations.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES, REQUIREMENTS, VISUAL ACUITY, AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work will occur indoors and out in a variety of conditions and temperature ranges. Tasks require standing for long periods of time, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects that weigh up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Work is high paced at times, must be able to perform in a busy environment. Physical demands listed here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform essential job functions. - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
- Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

- Substantial repetitive movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned (i.e., custodial, food services, general laborer, etc.) or to make general observations of facilities or structures (i.e., security guard, inspection, etc.).
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities may occur inside and outside.
