Job DescriptionTitle: General Counsel
Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid - 3 days onsite)
Type: Temp to Perm
Compensation: $90-$120/hour
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute the organization's legal, compliance, and policy strategy in close partnership with senior leadership and the executive team.
- Provide legal oversight and strategic guidance across 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, including governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
- Advise on and oversee PAC and Super PAC-related legal matters, including compliance, governance, and contracts with politically affiliated entities.
- Oversee and support teams responsible for government affairs, policy development, and litigation-related work, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and legal requirements.
- Direct and advise on legislative, regulatory, and judicial advocacy efforts at the federal and state levels.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including vendor, donor, advocacy, and PAC/Super PAC-related contracts.
- Serve as a senior legal and policy advisor to leadership on complex, high-impact issues affecting the organization's mission and operations.
- Represent the organization with external stakeholders, coalition partners, regulators, and in public or policy-facing forums as needed.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor with active District of Columbia bar admission.
- 10+ years of experience in legal, policy, government affairs, or advocacy roles, including senior leadership responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience advising nonprofit or advocacy organizations, including c3/c4 compliance and politically affiliated entities.
- Hands-on experience with PAC and/or Super PAC legal issues, including compliance, governance, and contracting.
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex, cross-functional initiatives in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
- Strong strategic judgment, executive presence, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership, policy teams, and external stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel and maintain a flexible schedule as organizational needs require.
