Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Supervisor is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and directing the daily activities of heavy equipment operators, truck drivers, and work crews in construction, maintenance, repairs, and clean‑up operations for Lewis Construction. This leadership role ensures safe, compliant, and efficient use of all heavy equipment across job sites. The supervisor works closely with operations, mechanics, project managers, and field crews to maintain productivity, equipment readiness, and safety standards.


Primary Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Planning

  • Plans, assigns, supervises, and lays out work for heavy equipment operators, truck drivers, and work crews.
  • Coordinates equipment needs with project leadership and adjusts staffing/equipment based on site conditions.
  • Dispatches drivers, equipment, and vehicles in support of daily and long‑term operational requirements.
  • Inspects proposed work sites and determines appropriate equipment usage.

Equipment Management & Maintenance

  • Maintains records of equipment maintenance, repairs, schedules, and inventory.
  • Oversees equipment condition, safe operation, and compliance with all site and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinates repairs and preventive maintenance with mechanics and vendors.
  • Tracks materials, supplies, equipment hours, and lifecycle use.

Safety, Compliance & Training

  • Enforces operational procedures, policies, and safety guidelines for equipment operations.
  • Facilitates safety meetings and supports operator training.
  • Conducts hazard assessments, responds to incidents, and ensures OSHA, DOT, and company compliance.

Team Leadership

  • Provides training, coaching, direction, and performance guidance to equipment operators.
  • Supports employee development, evaluates skills, and ensures operators follow safe work practices.
  • Maintains effective communication with workers, contractors, and management.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintains job site documentation, logs, and communication records.
  • Assists with planning meetings and offers recommendations on equipment deployment.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid NC Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching while inspecting equipment or job sites.
  • Ability to enter and exit heavy equipment safely using ladders, steps, and handholds.
  • Capability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment up to 50 pounds, occasionally heavier with assistance.


Environmental Conditions

  • Work performed in outdoor construction environments with exposure to weather, dust, dirt, noise, and vibrations.
  • Ability to wear required PPE including hard hats, safety boots, gloves, eye protection, high‑visibility gear, and hearing protection.


Sensory & Cognitive Demands

  • Clear vision and hearing required to safely monitor equipment and site conditions.
  • Ability to maintain situational awareness in active job sites.
  • Strong hand‑eye coordination.


Work Hours & Travel

  • Ability to work extended hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or overtime.
  • Must be able to travel between job sites and equipment yards as needed.
