Murray's Sturgeon Shop: Gourmet Specialty Food Store Manager

Murray's Sturgeon Shop, a renowned family-run specialty food store (NYT and Zagat reviewed, 4.7 on Google and Yelp) has been serving NYC and the nation with the highest quality smoked fish, caviar, and appetizing delights for 80 years. We are looking for an experienced, passionate, and entrepreneurial individual to step into the role of Gourmet Specialty Food Store Manager.

Key Responsibilities

· Operational Management: Oversee all daily store operations, including food preparation, product slicing, counter service, inventory, ordering, and scheduling.

· Specialized Product Expertise: Deep knowledge and skill in handling, preparation, and presentation of Jewish appetizing foods (especially smoked and cured fish, sturgeon, whitefish, lox, herring, etc.) and general high-quality fish products.

· Customer Experience: Uphold the reputation of our legacy shop by ensuring an exceptional, friendly, and knowledgeable customer experience. Develop and maintain strong relationships with our loyal clientele.

· Team Leadership: Recruit, train, mentor, and manage a small, dedicated team, fostering a positive, family-like work environment.

· Financial & Inventory Control: Manage budgets, control labor and food costs, minimize waste, and ensure accurate cash handling and reporting.

· Compliance: Ensure the shop maintains the highest standards of food safety, sanitation, and compliance with all health regulations.

· Growth & Strategy (Long-Term): Work closely with the current owners to identify opportunities for growth, streamline processes, and develop strategies for the future of the shop and continued success of Murray’s.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

· Experience: A minimum of 2+ years of managerial experience in a high-volume, specialty deli, appetizing shop, restaurant, catering service, or similar fine food environment is required.

· Specialization: Proven, hands-on experience and a genuine passion for specialty Jewish appetizing foods (deli/fish) are a plus but not required – a willingness to learn is also acceptable.

· Leadership & Personality: A great, outgoing personality with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be a self-starter, highly reliable, and capable of leading by example in a fast-paced setting.

· Entrepreneurial Drive: A strong interest in taking on a long-term managerial role.

· Integrity: Must align with the values of a family-run business, demonstrating honesty, dedication, and respect.
