Direct Counsel is seeking a State and Local Tax (SALT) Attorney (5–9 Years) to join an Am Law firm.
Locations:
Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, or Washington, DC.
Direct Counsel has partnered with a nationally recognized law firm in seeking an experienced tax attorney to join its Taxation Practice Group, with a primary focus on state and local tax (SALT) matters. This role offers the opportunity to advise sophisticated clients on complex multistate tax issues across a variety of industries.
Position Overview:
The firm is seeking a mid-to-senior level tax attorney with significant experience advising clients on multistate taxation, tax controversy matters, and transactional tax exposure issues. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working directly with clients and managing complex SALT projects.
Key Responsibilities:

Advise clients on multistate tax planning and structuring matters

Handle state tax controversy matters involving income and sales tax issues

Provide guidance on remediation of state tax exposure in transactional contexts

Support tax aspects of corporate transactions and client advisory work

Assist with matters involving unclaimed property and escheatment (preferred)

Manage client relationships and oversee project execution
Qualifications:

5–9 years of state and local tax (SALT) experience

JD from an ABA-accredited law school

Active bar membership in good standing (or eligibility for admission in the office of hire)

Strong client relationship and project management skills

Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to thrive in complex, fast-paced environments
Compensation:
$310,000 – $370,000 annually, depending on experience and other job-related factors.
