Job Description
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing buses and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe vehicle operation. This role requires a commitment to safety, strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a cohesive team in a 24/7 environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a consistent “safety first” mindset in all work activities.
- Diagnose, inspect, repair, and replace components related to:
- Brake, fuel, emissions, steering, suspension, and driveline systems
- Passenger heating and cooling systems
- Internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel)
- Transmissions and differential systems
- ADA equipment, gauges, controls, and safety equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, battery service, and CNG tank inspections.
- Use computer diagnostic software and equipment (e.g., Cummins Insite, Allison DOC) to troubleshoot and repair systems.
- Interpret and follow technical manuals, drawings, and electrical schematics.
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, hydraulic presses, hoists, and lifting equipment to complete repairs.
- Inspect and align vehicle chassis and conduct test drives to verify repairs.
- Perform minor fabrication, welding, soldering, and related repair work.
- Maintain accurate electronic service documentation and repair history.
- Respond to service calls for in-field repairs.
- Inspect, adjust, and repair protective guards, loose components, and safety devices.
- Assist in training lower-level mechanics as needed.
- Perform supervisory backfill duties when assigned.
- Complete other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities.
- Intermediate computer proficiency, including Microsoft applications.
- Ability to read and follow schematics and technical documents.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong time management and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Customer-focused, professional, and able to maintain confidentiality and integrity.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and foster a culture of safety.
- Sound judgment with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical individuals.
- Willingness to work a 24/7 schedule as required.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- One to two years of vocational/technical training or equivalent experience preferred.
- One year of progressive heavy equipment maintenance experience preferred.
- Additional technical courses, certifications, or seminars are desirable.
Mechanic A Classification Requirements
- Capable of diagnosing and repairing the most complex equipment issues.
- Able to train and mentor Mechanics B and C.
- Must possess:
- CDL with air brakes and passenger endorsement
- 609 and 608 air conditioning certifications
- At least five ASE H or T series certifications (two must be T6, T7, H6, or H7)
Licenses & Other Requirements
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with required endorsements.
- Must provide personal hand tools necessary for assigned work.
- Must pass:
- DOT pre-employment physical
- Drug and alcohol screening
- Background investigation
- Pre-employment performance evaluation and assessments
- No criminal convictions, DUI/DWI, assault, or controlled substance violations within the last five years.
