Summary
The Maintenance Technician Facility Custodian is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the homeless day shelter facility. This role includes performing routine cleaning, basic maintenance, minor repairs, and monitoring building systems to support a hygienic and welcoming environment for clients, staff and visitors.

Essential Functions
Facility Maintenance Duties
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, HVAC)
- Conduct regular inspections of the facility to identify and address safety or maintenance concerns
- Maintain and monitor building systems, equipment, and tools in good working condition
- Report major maintenance issues to supervisor and coordinate with outside contractors as needed
- Ensure walkways, entrances, and emergency exits are clean, safe, and accessible
Custodial Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, showers, kitchens, and common areas multiple times daily
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors throughout the facility
- Empty and disinfect trash bins regularly

Health & Safety
- Use cleaning products and equipment safely, following all label instructions and safety protocols
- Ensure proper storage and labeling of cleaning agents and maintenance materials
- Follow CDC protocols for cleaning up bodily fluids or hazardous spills
- Assist in maintaining compliance with public health, fire, and building codes
- Support pest control efforts through regular inspections and reporting
Shelter Support & Collaboration
- Set up and break down rooms or spaces for programming or meeting use (tables and chairs)
- Assist staff with moving donations, supplies, or furniture as needed
- Respond to maintenance-related requests from shelter staff in a timely and respectful manner
- Interact respectfully with shelter guests; maintain appropriate boundaries and professionalism
- Participate in staff meetings and trainings related to shelter operations and safety
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain maintenance and cleaning logs/checklists as required
- Track inventory of cleaning supplies, maintenance tools, and request restocks when low
- Report any safety hazards, incidents, or damages immediately to the appropriate supervisor

Required Education and Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED, OR have 3 years of verifiable work experience in maintenance and janitorial services. A valid driver’s license, vehicle in operating condition and vehicle insurance is also required.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with heavier weight necessary at times. You are constantly required to stand; walk or occasionally climb stairs and use your hands and arms to reach objects. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not exposed to weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. In addition, you will receive specialized training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI). This training is provided to you so that you can effectively handle serious emotional and physical behavior that may be exhibited in dealing with the person(s) you will support. You must be physically and mentally able to effectively complete, pass, and execute the learned course material on the job.
