Senior Transportation Engineer – Roadways

📍 Plano, Texas | 💼 Full-Time | 🧭 In-Office / Hybrid

A well-established transportation engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Transportation Engineer to support and lead roadway and highway projects across Texas. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer with strong TxDOT knowledge who enjoys technical leadership, mentoring teams, and delivering high-quality transportation infrastructure projects.

You’ll contribute to projects from early planning through final design and construction support, working independently on smaller efforts and as a key contributor on larger, multidisciplinary programs.

Role Overview

In this position, you’ll lead roadway design efforts, guide junior engineers, and ensure projects are delivered efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with applicable standards. The role blends hands-on design work with team leadership, coordination, and limited business development support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of roadway and transportation design plans for urban and rural projects.
  • Perform and oversee complex engineering design for highways, arterials, intersections, and multimodal corridors.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and work plans for assigned tasks.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers, internal teams, and clients throughout project delivery.
  • Review, approve, and seal engineering deliverables in accordance with professional standards.
  • Supervise engineers and CAD staff, assigning tasks and reviewing work for quality and accuracy.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members through technical guidance and feedback.
  • Support proposal efforts and technical input for new transportation pursuits in Texas.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required (Texas PE preferred or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe).
  • 10+ years of experience in roadway and highway design.
  • Strong understanding of TxDOT design criteria, procedures, and PS&E production.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation, OpenRoads, and related roadway design tools.
  • Ability to solve complex technical challenges using sound engineering judgment.
  • Proven ability to review others’ work, manage time effectively, and meet project budgets and schedules.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
  • TxDOT precertification is a plus.

Work Environment

  • Collaborative, open-office setting.
  • Occasional local travel for project meetings, public engagement, and site visits.

Why This Opportunity

  • Work on impactful transportation projects that support growing communities.
  • Join a strong Texas roadway practice with a steady pipeline of work.
  • Take on a leadership role without losing hands-on technical involvement.
  • Competitive compensation, bonus eligibility, and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • Supportive culture that values mentorship, technical excellence, and career progression.
