Position Overview:
The Lead Building Engineer performs general HVAC, electrical and mechanical maintenance to provide safe, and well-maintained buildings within all facilities owned and/or maintained by The Blake School. This includes:
- Managing the completion of all preventative maintenance tasks and needed repairs
- Coordinating daily work and project schedules for the two-person engineer team and/or any vendor partners
- Lead by example and ensure all safety expectations are being followed
The Lead Building Engineer should be an expert in many areas of HVAC, basic electrical and general mechanical maintenance and repair, provide mentorship and training to buildings & grounds and maintenance staff. The Lead Building Engineer models an ideal team player by fostering and maintaining ethical, professional and courteous relations with community members, contractors and vendors.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Lead Building Engineer provides hands-on support, manages training and delegation of repairs within the buildings & grounds and maintenance staff in the areas that include but are not limited to:
- Daily mechanical repairs
- Routine and annual building inspections
- Inventory purchases of maintenance and building supplies
- Selection and quality assurance of vendor services and management of their maintenance once service is completed
- Follow health and safety requirements and support environmental legislation
- Serve as a vendor liaison
- Support energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives
Requirements:
Qualifications\Duties:
- Knowledge and expertise in the areas of HVAC maintenance, facilities management, minor electrical repair, mechanical maintenance, carpentry and minor equipment repair and maintenance
- Maintain an inventory of spare parts
- Perform health and safety tests and inspections
- Maintain records on maintenance work performed
- Operation and maintenance of building automation systems
- Fill in for maintenance leads in emergency situations
- Manage budget in a fiscally responsible manner
- Be flexible, set priorities, handle multiple tasks and organize work flow
- Lay out, plan, install, maintain and repair all types of electrical equipment
- Apply for all electrical permits for work performed in the school
- Directly oversee projects as assigned and provide electrical expertise as requested
- Sign all electrical plans for the school requiring a master electrician's license
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance tasks
- Complete other tasks as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of post-secondary education and three years experience in the field
- Proficiency in HVAC operations (e.g. air handler, roof tops, split systems)
- Refrigeration license or willingness to obtain
- State of Minnesota chief "C" boiler operator license
- Certified pool operator license or willingness to obtain
- Current valid Minnesota or Wisconsin driver’s license; must be able to drive school vehicles per state and Blake insurance regulations; must have a reliable vehicle for transportation
- 2-3 years supervisory experience in large facilities, educational institutions or combination of higher education and experience
- Proficient in English (written and verbal)
- Willing to carry a cell phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and respond to emergency situations as required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Credentials from an accredited vocational college in facility maintenance preferred
- Proficient knowledge of applicable federal, state and local ordinances preferred
- Experience with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, woodcraft, structural construction
- Ability to read blueprint drawings preferred
Typical Work Schedule:
- Monday-Friday, 6am-2:30pm or 7am-3:30pm
- Hours may vary to meet school facility needs, including but not limited to signature school events such as Homecoming, Legacy Day, Grandfriends Day and Commencement
- Must be available to respond to emergency calls 24/7
Pay Range: $28-40 hourly
This salary range includes the expected annual salary for this position. In making a salary determination, we consider professional experience, applicable qualifications and other job-related factors. Based on these factors, a candidate's salary offer could exceed this range.
