The Role of Vitamin Supplements in Regrowth After a Hair Transplant

My Hair UK is a doctor-led hair transplant clinic, focused exclusively on Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgery. Every procedure is carried out by GMC-registered surgeons using advanced tools and techniques, with an emphasis on delivering natural and lasting results. Our clinic specialises in scalp, beard, and eyebrow restoration, with all services tailored to your unique goals, hair type, and scalp characteristics. We do not offer strip surgery (FUT), nor do we rely on outdated robotics like ARTAS. Instead, we prioritise manual precision and surgeon experience.

Patient care does not stop at surgery. Our aftercare system includes one-to-one medical guidance, personalised regrowth plans, and access to a secure online platform. This platform provides pre-op instructions, post-op care guides, regrowth timelines, and direct messaging with the medical team. We also offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for patients looking to support early follicular healing and regrowth.

We believe that each patient should be supported through every stage of their journey – from consultation to full regrowth. This includes offering clear medical advice on topics such as nutrition and supplements.

Hair Transplant Costs in the UK vs Australia – Is the Price Difference Justified?

Hair transplant pricing varies significantly across countries. On average, patients in the UK pay between £3,000 and £7,000 for an FUE procedure depending on graft number, clinic reputation, and location. At My Hair UK, our hair transplant costs remain competitive, starting at £2,499 for smaller sessions and capping at £4,899 for 3,500 grafts. For most patients, this range offers comprehensive coverage for mild to advanced hairline or crown recession.

In Australia, the same FUE procedure typically ranges from AUD $10,000 to $18,000, equivalent to roughly £5,200 to £9,300. Costs are higher in Sydney and Melbourne, especially at clinics that offer surgeon-led procedures. Despite the price increase, there is not always a corresponding rise in surgeon experience or post-operative care. Furthermore, some clinics in Australia charge additional fees for anaesthesia, medications, or follow-up PRP sessions – services that are included at no extra cost at My Hair UK.

Flight costs must also be considered. While Australian residents may find domestic options feasible, UK-based patients considering travel to Australia for surgery would face significant travel expenses, downtime, and logistical barriers for follow-up care. These issues are avoided by choosing a domestic provider that offers continued access to the medical team post-operatively.

Another critical factor is regulation. In the UK, hair transplant clinics are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and procedures are strictly overseen by GMC-registered doctors. In Australia, although medical regulation exists, there have been reports of over-reliance on technicians for surgery in high-volume clinics. This raises concerns around graft survival rates and long-term outcomes.

If you are comparing clinics internationally, ask yourself:

  • Will I meet the surgeon before the surgery day?
  • Are all grafts extracted and implanted by a qualified doctor?
  • Is my aftercare included in the quoted price?

Cost matters, but it should never come at the expense of your long-term result.

The Role of Vitamin Supplements in Hair Regrowth After a Transplant

Hair growth is a complex biological process that relies on adequate nutrition, hormonal balance, and vascular supply. After a hair transplant, the survival and regrowth of grafts depend on how well your body supports tissue healing and follicular activity. Although the FUE technique is minimally invasive, it still triggers an inflammatory and repair response in the skin. This is where nutrition plays a role – particularly vitamins and trace minerals.

At My Hair UK, we do not recommend routine vitamin supplements for every patient. Instead, we assess your individual case and only suggest supplementation where there’s a clear benefit. That said, several nutrients have evidence-based roles in supporting hair health:

Vitamin D

Vitamin D modulates the hair cycle and supports the activation of hair follicle stem cells. Low vitamin D levels are associated with various types of alopecia, including telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. A study published in the International Journal of Trichology found that patients with non-scarring alopecia had significantly lower vitamin D levels compared to controls.

After a transplant, maintaining vitamin D within optimal range may support the early anagen phase of transplanted follicles. We routinely check vitamin D in patients who report slow regrowth or have a history of autoimmune conditions.

Iron and Ferritin

Iron is required for DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells such as hair matrix keratinocytes. Low serum ferritin – the storage form of iron – has been implicated in chronic hair shedding. While rare in men, iron deficiency is common in pre-menopausal women. A study published in Dermatology Practical & Conceptual highlighted the role of iron in hair biology and encouraged ferritin correction in patients undergoing restoration surgery.

At My Hair UK, we recommend checking ferritin in female patients, particularly those with heavy periods, vegetarian diets, or a history of fatigue. Iron supplements are only advised if ferritin is below 50 µg/L.

B-Complex Vitamins

Biotin (vitamin B7) is widely marketed for hair growth, but evidence in non-deficient individuals is weak. True biotin deficiency is rare and typically related to malabsorption or long-term use of antibiotics or anti-seizure medications. Other B vitamins, such as B12 and folate, are relevant in patients with anaemia, but their direct effect on post-transplant regrowth remains unproven in well-nourished adults.

We discourage the use of high-dose over-the-counter multivitamins unless a deficiency is confirmed. Instead, we encourage a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and leafy greens. Excessive supplementation can be harmful and may lead to misleading blood test results, particularly with biotin, which can interfere with thyroid function assays.

Zinc

Zinc contributes to keratin production and scalp immune regulation. While low levels have been associated with diffuse hair loss, excessive zinc can impair copper absorption and paradoxically worsen hair quality. We only advise zinc supplementation when serum levels are shown to be suboptimal.

Overall, vitamin supplements can support regrowth after a hair transplant – but only when used in the right context. At My Hair UK, we take a medical approach to every decision, including nutrition. We believe in evidence over marketing and always prioritise your long-term results.

If you're unsure whether your vitamin levels are optimal for regrowth, we can arrange blood testing and personalised guidance as part of your aftercare plan.
