POSITION INFORMATION
Position Summary/Purpose:
The Washington Performing Arts Advancement team—a creative,lean, and collaborative collective of arts professionals—seeks anexperienced and dynamic Major Gifts Officer (MGO). Reporting to theDirector of Advancement, the MGO is responsible for growing thecorporate giving portfolio, cultivating diplomatic and governmentrelationships, and managing Washington Performing Arts Board andJunior Board pipelines in support of the organization’s mission,vision, and growth.
A key member of the Advancement team, the MGO will establisheffective, strong working relationships with Director ofAdvancement, Washington Performing Arts President &amp; CEO, theBoard of Directors, Junior Board, President Emeritus, and otherManagement and Advancement colleagues to coordinate and executeimmediate and long-term fundraising initiatives. As aself-motivated, externally facing frontline fundraiser, the MajorGifts Officer will possess an entrepreneurial spirit and carrygreat enthusiasm for building and growing meaningful partnershipswith corporations, local businesses, and individuals, have a proventrack record of success in fundraising, and be passionate aboutdiversity, equity, and inclusion and the performing arts. The MGOwill facilitate connections between the right WPA ambassador (CEO,Director, Board Member) and new prospects for support.
The MGO develops and advances strategies and relationships toengage the corporate, diplomatic, and congressional communities,and other elected and appointed officials in Washington, D.C. tothe advantage of Washington Performing Arts and its programs, witha focus on institutional visibility and well-aligned partnerships.In addition, this candidate serves and collaborates with otherdepartments as project coordinator in various programs and events.The MGO will also build and support a portfolio of prospects forthe CEO.

Key programs and giving opportunities to leverage include:

<li>Performance Sponsorships - Secure sponsorships for dozens ofmusic and dance performances each season, covering a broad spectrumof genres including classical, jazz, gospel, chamber, andcontemporary;</li>
<li>Education and Community Engagement Programs - Cultivateconnections that support the organization’s robust gospel musicprogramming and training, community--based cultural programming,global art forms, and instrumental and vocal programs developed inpartnership with D.C. public schools;</li>
<li>Washington Performing Arts’ World in our City initiative -Develop and implement strategies to weave together programs withglobal focus including featured programming on the annualpresenting season, the Embassy Adoption Program (in partnershipwith D.C. Public Schools), and Mars Arts D.C.; and</li>
<li>Special Event Sponsorships - Identify and secure special eventssponsorship opportunities including a large-scale annual Gala, thequadrennial Inauguration Weekend Brunch, and special productionslike Marian Anderson 75th Anniversary Concert and Hazel Scott 101stBirthday Celebration</li>

Essential Duty #1: PortfolioManagement&nbsp;Corporate/Institutional/DiplomaticEntities Cultivation, Strategy, and Solicitation
Percentage: 80%

Develop Strategies toIncrease Corporate Giving and Engagement - Identify, cultivate, andsolicit prospective corporate donors, as well as diplomaticentities, and develop strategies to increase their level of givingand full engagement with Washington Performing Arts. Mobilize theBoard and CEO as sources of connections, and as points of contactin achieving goals in this area.

<li>Donor Portfolio Management &amp; Building - build, manage, andgrow a portfolio of 40+ active and prospective corporate supportersfor annual, special, or multi-year gifts beginning at $5,000 andextending to five and six figures; support and grow an annualportfolio goal of more than $350,000 in contributed revenue. Ensurethat CEO is engaged in cultivating and recognizing majorgifts.</li>
<li>Board of Directors/Corporate Donation Cultivation andStewardship - In close collaboration with the Director ofAdvancement and President &amp; CEO, serve as primary relationshipmanager for Washington Performing Arts Board of Directors memberswho also hold Corporate Board seats, to facilitate corporatedonations, giving and stewardship. Work closely with key BoardMembers in building portfolio of contacts for WPA and the Member tocultivate.</li>
<li>Strategic Partnership - Develop engagement andrelationship-building strategies for legislators andrepresentatives at the local, state, and federal level, diplomaticentities, and related associations, to support direct fundraisinginitiatives, often in partnershipwith the Director of Advancementand President and CEO</li>
<li>Project Reporting - Submit periodic progress and final projectreports to fulfill donor compliance expectations, via corporatefunding and diplomatic portals</li>
<li>Creation of Stewardship Materials - Create stewardshipmaterials by working with programmatic colleagues and designcolleagues to generate annual reports, e-news vehicles, and othercollateral as needed</li>
<li>Special Events Engagement - Manage corporate and diplomaticengagement and participation connected to the Annual Gala andAuction, and other large- scale special events like the QuadrennialInauguration Weekend Brunch</li>
</ul>
Essential Duty #2: Board and Junior BoardGovernance
Percentage: 20%
<ul>
<li>Develop Strategies to Increase Corporate Giving andEngagement- Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospectivecorporate donors, as well as diplomatic entities, and developstrategies to increase their level of giving and full engagementwith Washington Performing Arts.</li>
<li>Board of Directors/Corporate Donation Cultivation andStewardship- In close collaboration with the ChiefAdvancement Officer and President &amp; CEO, serve as primaryrelationship manager for Washington Performing Arts Board ofDirectors members who also hold Corporate Board seats, tofacilitate corporate donation giving and stewardship.</li>
<li>Develop and Pitch Proposals- Build a pipelineand develop and pitch proposals for corporate and individual donorsand prospects who have connections to corporate foundations, andfor diplomatic entities that could be supportive of WashingtonPerforming Arts</li>
<li>Project Reporting- Submit periodic progressand final project reports to fulfill donor compliance expectations,via corporate funding and diplomatic portals</li>
<li>Strategic Partnership- Develop engagement andrelationship-building strategies for legislators andrepresentatives at the local, state, and federal level, diplomaticentities, and related associations, to support direct fundraisinginitiatives, often in partnership with the Chief AdvancementOfficer and President and CEO</li>
<li>Junior Board Facilitation- Facilitate andleverage Junior Board relationships within the corporate,diplomatic, and government communities</li>
<li>Special Events Engagement- Manage corporateand diplomatic engagement and participation connected to the AnnualGala and Auction, and other large-scale special events like theQuadrennial Inauguration Weekend Brunch</li>
</ul>
Minimum Qualifications:
<ul>
<li>
4+ years of experience infundraising
</li>
<li>Some college coursework in a related field, or an equivalentcombination of education and experience</li>
<li>Proven track record of success in cultivating, soliciting, andclosing gifts of $5,000 to</li>
<li>$50,000, and ideally six figures as well, from corporations andindividuals</li>
<li>Proven ability to set goals strategically and overseeexecution</li>
<li>Experience working with an energetic and engaged CEO andpositioning them for success in building support</li>
<li>Experience managing and partnering with Board members,high-level volunteers, and executive staff</li>
<li>Proven ability to interact with and influence philanthropicleaders</li>
<li>Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independentlyand to work effectively and cross-functionally with internal andexternal constituents</li>
<li>Demonstrated commitment to and interest in, the performingarts</li>
