The News &amp; Content unit of the University of Virginia’s <a href="https://communications.virginia.edu/" target="_blank">Office of Communications</a> seeks a Senior Editor to help us tell the dynamic story of UVA and to advance its strategic priorities through content that engages with and grows a multitude of audiences.
This position would be ideal for a seasoned, mature editor at a daily newspaper, magazine or online publication with significant deadline experience and a track record of working with writers to generate compelling stories and improve copy.
The Senior Editor, reporting to the UVA Today Managing Editor, will oversee several direct reports; edit copy for grammar, accuracy, and adherence to Associated Press and local style; and research and write stories as needed. The ideal candidate will be a sharp-eyed, detail-focused journalist who efficiently shepherds daily stories through the editing process while also taking the time to help writers improve their craft. He or she will be attuned to news and current events and be able to quickly identify opportunities to showcase UVA’s students, faculty and staff in the context of the day’s key stories and issues.
Our Content &amp; News team operates a high-quality newsroom that values timeliness and urgency in its content, and collaborates to produce one of higher education’s most successful news products, and the most important strategic communications platform at the University. The <a href="https://news.virginia.edu/" target="_blank">UVA Today</a> Daily Report is delivered Monday through Friday to more than 150,000 recipients, and our UVA Today content attracts more than &nbsp;5 million page views annually.

Responsibilities:

Area of expertise may range from medieval to contemporary, with specialty and chronological focus open. The APFF’s primary responsibility will be to serve as Managing Editor for the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies with an additional 1:1 course load teaching Spanish language courses in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. <li>Independently manages, guides and coordinates photography and visual images for assigned stories and features, ensuring the smooth flow of work to and from photo shoots, photo editing to production</li>
<li>Attend news meetings to gather information about ongoing and upcoming news events. </li>
<li>Coordinate photo requests with the photo assignments editor to obtain photographs in a timely manner. </li>
<li>Work with designers and/or news layout editors to ensure the best and most appropriate images appear in the newspaper and online.</li>
<li>Edits wire services reports for viable photographic content. </li>
<li>Complete any additional responsibilities required for the needs of the department.</li>
</ul>
Qualifications: 
<ul>
<li>Assists in leading the photo operation of a highly effective team atmosphere; sets clear expectations and establishes schedules; photography assignments.</li>
<li>A journalist with strong artistic and photojournalism leadership qualities, photo-editing knowledge and skill, and the ability to lead the newsroom in the development of inventive, imaginative, and original stories.</li>
<li>Assigns, produces and edits a wide variety of photography for sections of the Globe newsroom.</li>
<li>Oversees and approves all photography and recommendations prior to it being finally produced for publication.</li>
<li>Plans and manages all aspects of photographic research and the production of photography and related pages online; oversees the selection and editing/cropping of photography that reinforces the vision, look and feel of the Globe’s digital platforms and enhances users’ visits.</li>
<li>Generates innovative, imaginative, and original ideas for photo-driven stories.</li>
<li>A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment </li>
</ul>
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Experience
<ul>
<li>Required: 5+ years of journalism experience in a photography environment. Journalism, photo editing or photography, degree preferred, 4-year degree preferred.</li>
<li>Has advanced photojournalism experience and judgment, has advanced knowledge of the photo image selection and editing</li>
<li>Has advanced experience in photograph research and editing, including the use of digital and electronic editing / cropping tools and software</li>
<li>Knowledge of videojournalism or video editing is a plus.</li>
<li>Use advanced multimedia, video and audio reporting techniques to tell the story</li>
</ul>
